Millions lost, child escapes death as flood wrecks havoc in Anambra community

Properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed in flood menace ocasioned by recent wave of rainfall in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

A little child almost got drowned in the deluge while scores have been displaced with many residents abandoning their homes since the last rain.

Residents who narrated their ordeal to reporters, regretted that most victims were faced with deadly health hazards.

They called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to bring an end to the flooding and erosion problems in the area.

“Accessing our homes during rainfall has become a nightmare. Many people have been displaced, homes abandoned since the last devastating rainfall.

“The recent flood damaged our properties worth millions of naira. A little child almost got drowned in the flood.

“We call on relevant agencies of government to devise urgent solutions to our plight,” one of the residents who identified himself as Okey Uzor said.

Daily Vendor gathered that some deep spirited indigenes have started making cash donations to the Town Union to assist the flood victims rebuild their homes.

Reacting, Team Make Ogbunike Great (TMOG) described the deluge as excessive, leading to collapse of several roads in the area and posing threat to commuters.

According to team leader, Dr Harris Chuma-Odili, “The flood is excessive; it flows into many houses during rainfalls. The last one condemned people’s properties worth millions of Naira. We are appealing to the government to come to our aid. 

“We want the State Government ably led by Prof Chukwuma Soludo to address the root cause of the flooding, tackle the erosion menace and fix the dilapidated roads.

“Many roads are collapsing in Ogbunike due to flooding, and consequently posing threat to commuters.”
