Unknown gunmen have shot dead a member of the Anambra State Vigilante Service attached to the Central Security, Obosi, in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident occurred at about 3:15am on Thursday opposite the St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Obosi, along Nkpor/Obosi highway.
Sources claimed that men of the vigilante service were on a routine patrol when they ran into the hoodlums, who engaged them in a gun duel for several minutes.
It was gathered that during the gun battle, the gang shot dead a vigilante.
A source said that the incident disrupted commercial activities in the community, including a planned protest against land-grabbing activities proposed by landlords in the area.
The traditional ruler of Obosi community, Igwe Chidubem Iweka confirmed the incident.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Tochukwu Ikenga while also confirming the incident said that the police had commenced a manhunt for the suspects.
“It was an unfortunate incident; no arrest has been made yet, but investigation is ongoing please,” Ikenga added.
