The people of Oba in the Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State , on Saturday, protested sand mining at the Anambra Airport site .
They called on the Minister of State for Environment , Sharon Ikeazor, to intervene to save them from erosion problems resulting from the mining activities .
The regent of Oba community , Prince Noel Ezenwa , who addressed journalists, said the leadership of the community wrote to Ikeazor and the member representing the area in the House of Representatives , Obinna Chidoka , on the matter .
He said , “ We have written to the Minister of ( State for ) Environment , Ms Sharon Ikeazor , and member representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives , Obinna Chidioka .
“The two have also visited the site and were alarmed at the devastation caused by the sand mining activities. They promised to talk to the state government to stop the activities of sand miners .
“We are calling on them to help resolve the problem of erosion by checkmating the activities of sand miners in the community , which has escalated erosion in the area . ”
Meanwhile , Abia State Government has given illegal occupants still doing business on the premises of Enyimba Hotels , Aba , 48 hours to vacate the property or be prepared to “face the consequences. ”
The Chief of Staff to the governor , Dr Anthony Agbazuere , gave the directive while addressing the illegal occupants , comprising artisans , mechanics and traders during an inspection visit to the site .
