Extortion Of Enugu Farmers: The World Awaits Ugwuanyi’s Reaction

Barely 24 hours after the productive Enugu Poultry farmers carried out a peaceful protest over extortion by the Enugu East chairman, Mr. Alex Ugwu, the world has patiently awaited the reaction of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

The high expectations of what action the Governor would take against the erring chairman may not be unconnected to the fact that with the present COVID-19 situation, all government including the federal government have rolled out packages in support of farmers.

The action of the Council chairman to feed fat from the same farmers has should been viewed as an act of sabotage.

It is further perceived in some quarters as a deliberate effort to go against the Buhari government which since inception has channeled so much resources to farming.

As a Local Government that receives monthly allocation directly from the federal government, nothing short of severe sanction against the chairman would show seriousness on the part of the Enugu state government against such a despicable act.

Treated with kids gloves other chairmen may tow the same line of Alex Ugwu which may spell disaster for farmers and farming in Enugu State.

The Poultry farmers in Enugu it must be recalled donated over 500 crates of eggs and thousand of chicken to the State government as their contribution towards alleviating the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on Enugu masses.

They did not mince words in their allegations when the stated:

Hear them; “Since this year, the new local government chairman Alex Ugwu unleashed a bunch of touts and we began hearing of youth empowerment levy, we began hearing of site maintenance levy.

“And some of these are charged as high as N30,000 not per farm, but per plot. So if you have a farm of about 10 plots you are supposed to cough out N300,000 for youth empowerment levy after paying other regular levies.

“This is mischievous, it is irresponsible and should be condemned. The chairman must be called to order.”

Action is the word. And that is what the world is expecting from the Enugu Governor.
