Chidoka moves to intervene in violent protest by Nigerians in Indonesia

Following violent demonstration at the Nigerian Embassy in Jakarta by Nigerians living in Indonesia over what they described as discrimination and targeted raids by Indonesian Immigration Officers, a group, Citizens Forum has called on the former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka to intervene in the matter, and help find lasting solution to issues of concern raised by the community of young Nigerians in the country.

The DAILY VENDOR recalls that on June 25, 2020, aggrieved Nigerians resident in Indonesia took to the streets with placards and were heard chanting “enough is enough” as they marched to the Nigerian Embassy in Jakarta.

The protesters accused Indonesian immigration officers of carrying out targeted raids against Nigerians which they said lead to the killing of their compatriots sometimes when they refuse to pay money to the officers.

According to the protesters, the last straw was the case of a 41-year-old Nigerian man who fell from a nine-storey building while attempting to escape from immigration officers.

The angry protester who destroyed properties at the Nigerian Consulate accused the Embassy of doing nothing while her citizens were being targeted and harassed.

Announcing his acceptance to intervene in the matter and help find common grounds between them and the Nigerian government represented by the Embassy, Chidoka said he will participate in a Facebook live conversation on Tuesday 7, (today) at 3pm to hear from the protesting Nigerians with a view to articulating their views and engaging the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

Chidoka said “Nigerians in Indonesia have been in the news for the recent violent demonstration at the Embassy in Jakarta. Efforts are on to resolve the numerous issues but trust has broken down between the Embassy and the Nigerian Community.

“The Citizens Forum has asked me to intervene to help find common grounds between the community of young Nigerians and the government as represented by the Embassy.

“I will participate in a Facebook live conversation to hear from these angry Nigerians with a view to articulating their views and engaging the Minister of Foreign Affairs, a fine gentleman.

Join us in the call if the issue is of interest to you. Hopefully I will share the stream on my page.”
