Workers in Niger State give 7-day ultimatum over salary deductions

Workers in Niger State have issued a seven-day ultimatum over payment of 70 per cent salary or risk total strike.

Chairman Trade Union Congress (TUC) Comrade Inusa Tanimu and Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of NLC, Comrade Mahmud Aminu Muye gave the ultimatum after the State Government paid 70 per cent of the workers’ salaries.

The state government reduced the salaries of workers by 30% blaming it on the shortfall in the FAAC allocation.

The workers insisted they would rather go hungry than receive pay cut asking the government to pay them their full entitlements.

Last Thursday and Friday, the Government went ahead to implement their decision with the payment of 70 per cent of the workers’ salaries.

Tanimu expressed disappointment with the development, vowing they will embark on a three-day warning strike after expiration of the ultimatum to press home their demands.

Muye, on his part, described government’s action as illegal and unacceptable, lamenting with 30 per cent salary slash, most Civil Servants will be left with nothing to take home after bank deductions and payment of loans.
