Tragedy as Heavy Flood claims two motorists

‘Fish farmers in Egbejila, Akerebiata, and Asa dam axis had their fish farms washed away by the heavy floods’

The Kwara State Fire Service on Saturday recovered two corpses along Sobi road in Ilorin, the state capital, following Friday’s downpour that led to heavy flood.

Personnel of the fire service removed the two human bodies and a Toyota Yaris car with Reg No APP544E from the Asa river, Opposite Olusola Saraki Abattoir, along Sobi Road in the Ilorin metropolis.

Sources claimed that the incident occurred during Friday’s downpour when the victims were struggling to drive through the bridge and suddenly got stuck by the heavy flood, which pushed them into the river.

Until the time of filing this report, relations of the deceased are yet to claim the corpses.

Items found in their car included Islamic religious scriptures, among others.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle said that the rescue operation was a joint one.

He said “The victims overestimated the volume of water flow and decided to cross the road. All the people in the neighborhood gave their full support to the firemen throughout the operation.”

Meanwhile, the Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa has urged the general public to avoid driving whenever there is heavy rainfall.

In a related development, the Friday downpour caused serious economic losses to fish farmers in some parts of Ilorin.

Sources said that some fish farmers in Egbejila, Akerebiata, and Asa dam axis had their fish farms washed away by the heavy floods.
