…foam industry razed in Obosi

Twelve rooms bungalow with attached two bedroom apartments were on Saturday razed by fire in Umudioka Awka, Anambra State.

The incident was reportedly caused by little children said to be playing with fire in the apartment.

“The children, while playing, dropped the matches on a cushion foam which escalated to the kitchen where a cooking gas was placed. The gas immediately exploded,” a resident of the area said.

Similarly, a foam industry, located close to a Catholic church was same day gutted by fire in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the State.

An eyewitness said the fire would have spread to other nearby structures if not for quick response of the fire fighters who arrived the scene shortly.

Confirming both incidents, State Fire Chief, Engr. Martin Agbili said no life was lost in the inferno.

Agbili who said the cause of the Obosi fire was yet to be ascertained, however blamed the Awka fire on the kids playing with matches.

He urged residents to switch off electrical appliances when not in use, as well as avoid anything that could cause fire outbreak during the season, including keeping away any source of ignition like matches, lighter from reach of children.

He said, “At about 0940hrs (9.40am) of today 24-12-2022, Anambra State Fire Service, received a distress call of fire outbreak at No 8 Amangwu Lane Beside White House, Umudioka Awka.

“Immediately, we deployed our fire truck and our ever ready and fearless Firefighters to the fire scene. We swift into action, controlled and fought it to standstill.

“The cause of the fire was a result of Children playing with fire and dropped the matches on a cushion foam which escalated to the kitchen and involved cooking gas explosion.

“The fire badly affected the building but we were able to save a lot and prevented the fire from spreading to other nearby building. No life was lost during the fire incident.
