Anambra community welcomes back widow ostracized with masquerade

Umunankwo town in Ọgbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State has welcome back Mrs Nneka Uzor, a widow ostracized from the community with Masquerade.

The victim was received by the community following intervention by Commissioner for Women And Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo.

The reconciliation took place at the palace of the traditional ruler of Umunankwo, Igwe Fidelis Onumonu, in the presence of the Commissioner and her team as well as heads of both Men and Women Groups of the community.

Also in attendance were Former President-General of the community, some members of the Igwe’s Cabinet, architect of the inhumane act Mr Lazarus Uzor, brother to the widow among others.

The monarch had selected notable individuals from the community to visit the junction where the widow was ostracized and bring her back to the palace where the masquerades would accompany her to her village.

After necessary rites were performed to enable her participate fully in the affairs of the community, the monarch declared that on no account shall anyone be ostracized from the community.

Reconciling the ostracised widow with her community, the Commissioner said the intervention was in fulfillment of the promise she made to the widow.

She commended the traditional ruler for ensuring peace and unity in his community.

The widow appreciated the commissioner for keeping to her words and giving her justice, while the culprits apologized and pleaded for pardon.

Recall that the culprits were earlier arraigned before the Children, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka.
