Assailants kill vigilante leader, orderlies in Anambra

‘The attackers alighted from their vehicle and opened fire on the two orderlies of the vigilante’

A member of the Vigilante Group in Anambra State and two of his orderlies were Wednesday night killed by gunmen in Nkwo Market at Igboukwu in Aguata Local Government Area of the State.

The deceased, popularly called Shaba, was reportedly in the company with his orderlies, whose identities were still unknown at a bar in the market when the assailants opened fire on them.

“The attackers drove to the bar, alighted from their vehicle and opened fire on the two orderlies of the vigilante at the entrance of the bar before going inside to shoot the officer dead,” an eyewitness said.

There were two versions to the identity of the deceased. While a source said the vigilante officer was a member of the Ebubeagu group terrorising communities in the South-East, another claimed that the deceased were killed by members of a kidnapping ring whose leader was earlier busted by Shaba’s team.

Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, saying deliberate operation has been set in place to apprehend the attackers.

“There is a deliberate operation ongoing now aimed at apprehending the attackers. Meanwhile, patrols have been intensified within Aguata and its environs. Further development shall be communicated please,” he added.
