Anambra Police assure escortion, protection of INEC personnel, materials *deploy unarmed agents to man 5,720 poling units Awesome Ekene Anambra State police command said it has deployed unarmed law enforcement agents to man the 5,720 poling units across the state ahead of Presidential, National and state House of Assembly elections. The Command, through its spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, also assured escortion and protection of all Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) personnel and ad-hoc staff on election duty in synergy with the military and sister security agencies. It said the Command would also escort and protect all sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials as may be required by INEC. The statement partly reads, "The police will provide robust security/confidence building patrols across communities to reassure the citizenry and encourage voters to come out and exercise their franchise freely. "We'll maintain formidable rapid response teams across all the 326 wards to promptly and effectively respond to any distress call; as well as enforce movement restriction orders." While calling on people of the State to come out on election days to exercise their franchise without fear of favour, the Police advised political gladiators and supporters to play according to rules, as anyone found wanting, shall be dealt with according to the law. "In the words of the President and Commander-in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, “Nigerians should vote for whoever they like from whatever party. "Nobody will be allowed to mobilize resources and thugs to intimidate people in any constituency. "To members the fourth estate and the civil society, I urge you to be more patriotic, as you discharge your duties. Together, we can make our country proud," the statement concluded.

Police rescue INEC staff, corps members, others as gunmen storm Anambra training center Awesome Ekene Gunmen on Thursday invaded one of the training camps of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The hoodlums who stormed the area around 5.35pm, disrupted ongoing training exercise ahead of the general elections. A resident of the area who spoke in confidence said the incident left the victims, including INEC officers, corps members and students involved in the training, traumatized. "Although no one was killed in the process, but I doubt if those affected will still agree to continue with the exercise in the area because the incident left many traumatized," he said. Confirming the incident, Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga said the victims were rescued by joint security team operatives who prevented the hoodlums from abducting or causing harm to them. He said, "Following the Policing strategy put in place by the Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng that is potent and dynamic to respond to any emergency and security concerns especially ensuring a hitch-free 2023 elections in the state, Joint security team today 16/2/2023 by 5:35 pm successfully rescued and prevented armed men from hurting Electoral Officials on an assignment at Ukpor high school, Nnewi South LGA. "The INEC staff, with some corps members, University undergraduates and some MDA officials on the training program of Adhoc staff for the forthcoming 2023 General Elections were disrupted by the armed men. No life was lost "Joint security Patrols have been intensified in the area and efforts are still ongoing to track down the criminal elements. Further development shall be communicated."
