Anambra State government on Friday reiterated its commitment to make education in the state sustainable.
Commissioner for Education, Prof Ngozi Chuma-Udeh stated this during her visit to Community Secondary School Enugu-Abor Ufuma, Orumba North council area for on the spot assessment of the school.
She announced plans by Prof Chukwuma Soludo-led administration to begin total rehabilitation of all schools in Anambra State including the Community Secondary School Enugu-Abor Ufuma.
She also promised to relay the pains and complaints of the school to the Governor.
Addressing members of the community and the Old Boys Association of the school, the Commissioner disclosed how Soludo declared state of emergency on education sector on inception of office, employed 5000 teachers as well as the ongoing recruitment of another 3000 to be posted to core community schools following dearth of teachers there.
Earlier, Principal of the school, Mrs Nkoli Anikpe lamented infrastructural and moral decay she met on assumption of office three months ago.
“My eyes could not withstand the level of academic, infrastructural and moral decay I saw in the school since I became the principal of the school three months ago.
“As a result I cried out to the Old Boys Association and club of patrons to come to our aid,” she said.
President of the old boys association, Chief Elvis Umeh noted that the association which was still at foundation, was presently embarking on some projects which include fencing of the school, renovating of science laboratories which he said would cost them N20 million, installation of gate, among other projects.
Umeh who spoke through the group’s Financial Secretary, Chief Charles Chukwu stressed the lack of teachers and pleaded with government to add the school to its priority list for palliatives for Anambra schools.
Outgoing President -General of Enugu-Abor Ufuma Development Union, Victor Nwokolo who is also Deputy Corps Marshal, Administration and Human Resources, FRSC, Abuja, appreciated the Commissioner, her entourage, members of the community and Old Boys Association of the school for their efforts, stressing that there were still much to be done in the school.
The Commissioner, alongside members of the community, staff and management of the school, later inspected some of the dilapidated structures in the school for on the spot assessment.
