SERAP Reacts To NBA Withdrawal Of Gov. El-Rufai’s Invitation To Conference

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), on Thursday, supported the decision of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), to withdraw the invitation given to Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The DAILY VENDOR recalls that the NBA had earlier announced the withdrawal of its invitation granted to El-Rufai thru a tweet on its official Twitter handle, following protests by some lawyers.

It read: “The National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association at its ongoing meeting resolves that the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, H.E. Nasir El-Rufai, by the 2020 Annual General Conference Planning committee be withdrawn and decision communicated to the Governor.”

Governor El-Rufai was initially listed as a speakers at the upcoming NBA Conference billed to hold for August 26 – 29, 2020.

His inclusion sparked outrage and backlash, including on social media.

SERAP reacted via a tweet on its official Twitter handle, urging the NBA not to invite Nigerian governors until President Muhammadu Buhari obeys all outstanding court orders.

SERAP tweeted: “We welcome decision by @NigBarAssoc to withdraw its invitation to Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai on ground of poor human rights record.”

“We also call on NBA NOT to invite @NigeriaGov /its reps to its events until President Buhari obeys ALL outstanding court orders.”
