NANS JCC Lagos condemns LASUSTECH fee hike, demands immediate reversal

National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Council (NANS JCC) Lagos Axis has condemned in strong terms the recent actions of the management of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), formerly known as LASPOTECH.

It expressed deeply concern about the sudden hike in school fees of the institution, calling on the management to immediately revert this fees.

A statement by Chairman, NANS JCC Lagos Axis Comrade Alimi Lekan Idris and General Secretary, Comrade Abefe yusuf Abdulrazaq described the move as not only insensitive but a clear violation of the rights of the students who were already burdened with the high cost of education.

The body encouraged students to remain calm and peaceful as it worked towards finding satisfactory resolution to the issues.

The statement reads in part, “We believe that education should be accessible to all, and this sudden increase in fees hampers the progress of students from low-income backgrounds which may cause them to drop out.

“This move is not only insensitive but also a clear violation of the rights of the students who are already burdened with the high cost of education. We therefore call on the management to immediately revert this fees.

“Furthermore, we understand the current situation on ground setting up a committee to oversee the affairs of establishing a substantial Union will be encouraged than to take full possession of the union’s properties.

“We demand that the management should respect the autonomy of the SUG and allow proper transition of leadership by this process according to the constitution of the union.

“Additionally, the decision to move some departments to the annex at Isolo without proper notification to the students is highly disruptive and unfair. This will cause undue inconvenience to students and this can disrupt their routine by making it difficult to adapt to the new environment.

“Especially those who have already secured accommodation in Ikorodu. The management should have communicated this decision to the students in a timely and transparent manner, as it directly impacts their academic and personal lives.

“In light of the above, we call on the management of LASUSTECH to urgently address these issues and engage in constructive dialogue with the students and their representatives as soon as possible because if there are any dissatisfactions, students will exercise their campaign against this issue.

“Therefore, It is imperative that the rights and well-being of the students are prioritized, and that decisions affecting their education and campus life are made in a transparent and consultative manner.

“We also encourage the students to remain calm and peaceful as we work towards finding a satisfactory resolution to these issues. NANS JCC Lagos will continue to stand in solidarity with the students and will not hesitate to take further actions if the concerns raised are not adequately addressed.”
