As the yuletide season draws near, the federal government has commenced rehabilitation of some portions of the Onitsha to Owerri federal highway, following a motion by Hon. Obinna Chidoka, member representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency.
Chidoka during the 8th Assembly moved the motion “Resolution and Rehabilitation of Onitsha – Owerri Road”. Following up on the motion, Chidoka took pressmen to some bad portions of the federal highway, an action which reportedly drew the attention of the federal government to the need for urgent action.
The Onitsha-Owerri federal highway was dualised by the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, but has become a nightmare to motorists in recent time.
The Onitsha Upper Iweka portion of the road had recorded multiple heavy duty vehicle accidents within the past few months including that of a 20 feet container which slipped off a moving trailer and fell on two tricycles on Obodoukwu junction killing two people while four people were rushed to hospitals.
