He thanked the National government for its continued support to people living with  disabilities in Bungoma County urging it to add more funds towards the economic  empowerment initiatives.

Protect people with skin disorder, stakeholders urged

Protect people with skin disorder, stakeholders urged

Albinos in Matulo ward, Webuye East constituency, Bungoma County in Kenya at Golden Age Albino Support and Protection Programme (GAASP) have complained of being left out by the government in important development projects of the nation.

Albinism which is a rare, non contagious and genetically inherited disorder among all races in the world has been clarified as a normal occurrence.

Persons with albinism are regular people who have a decreased amount of melanin in their hair, skin and eyes, therefore are vulnerable to ultraviolet light.

Addressing the congregation during the world peace day, Moses Kizito, the chairman Golden Age Albino Support and Protection Programme (GAASP) said that albinism is a disorder like any other and none of them should be discriminated against as they need peace like other human beings.

“Albinos have been discriminated against for a long time and it’s high time the government considers them as normal Citizens,” he said, adding that many times their rights have been violated.

Kizito lauded GAASP for empowering albinos by training them on how to protect themselves and training them on livestock keeping and other ways of creating wealth to sustain them.

“Here we have been taught on rearing livestock, how to do business and how to protect ourselves,” he said.

He urged the education sector to provide teachers who understand albinism by allowing them front seats in classrooms, provided with boards that are well visible to them and school uniforms that have long sleeve shirts to protect their skins from light.

Queen Nafula, who is also a mother with albinism, advised mother’s who have children with this disorder to take good care of them as they are a precious gift to them.

“Children with albinism should be allowed to mingle with other children and take good care,” she said.

Nasimiyu also urged the government to provide oil for their skins in all the government hospitals in the region as their skins are sensitive to the sun and their eyes sensitive to light.

Chrisantus Ongulo, director Golden Age Albino Support and Protection Programme (GAASP) lauded the idea of peace as he urged the society to provide a peaceful environment for people with albinism.

“As any other human being, a person with albinism also needs peace of mind in their day to day living,” he said.

Assam’s CM to hold first peace meeting with Naga Militants

Assam’s CM to hold first peace meeting with Naga Militants

Indian North-eastern state Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sat down for the first meeting with Naga militants. Nagaland Chief Minister N Rio was also present at the meeting.

Speaking about the meeting, the Assam Chief Minister said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had given him the green signal to hold talks with militant groups like ULFA (Pareshpanthi).  Assam is a state in northeastern India, south of the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys. It is a state known for its wildlife, archeological sites and tea plantations.

In the west, Guwahati, Assam’s largest city, features silk bazaars and the hilltop Kamakhya Temple. The State of Nagaland was formally inaugurated on December 1st, 1963, as the 16th State of the Indian Union. It is bounded by Assam in the West, Myanmar (Burma) on the east, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam on the North and Manipur in the South. The State consists of seven Administrative Districts, inhabited by 16 major tribes along with other sub-tribes. Each tribe is distinct in character from the other in terms of customs, language and dress.

Speaking on the occasion, Himant said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are responsible for restoring lasting peace in Northeast India. And for that purpose we are in discussion with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland NSCN (IM) representatives in Dimapur.

The Chief Minister of Nagaland was also with us.”. The Nagaland Peace Accord is a peace treaty, signed, on 3 August 2015, between the Government of India, and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), to end the insurgency in the state of Nagaland in Northeast India. The National Socialist Council of Nagaland is a Naga nationalist separatist group operating mainly in Northeast India, with minor activities in northwest Myanmar, Barma. The demand of NSCN ( IM) is that it was against grouping of Assam in Bengal, and wanted the Naga Hills District to be included in an autonomous Assam in the independent India. It further emphasized local autonomy for the Naga Hills District, and a separate electorate for the Naga tribes.

According to the Assam Chief Minister: We are all very optimistic that such peace talks will be fruitful,” he said. He also talked to the Nagaland Chief Minister N. Rio about the political situation in the state before the next Nagaland Assembly elections” It is learned that Himanta and N Rio had a closed-door meeting with NSCN (IM) chief Thuingaleng Muivar for about an hour.

It is to state that the Indian northeastern states like Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Assam and large areas of Myanmar ( Capital of Barma) have long been the call for “Land of Naga’s or ‘Nagalim’ by the NSCN. The Naga separatist organization NSCN has been fighting their militant movement for a long time and the main aim of the NSCM is to establish a sovereign Naga state, “Nagalim”, which would consist of all the areas inhabited by the Naga people in Northeast India and Northwest Myanmar.

The NSCN’s slogan is “Nagaland for Christ”. The group is currently fighting for the separation of Nagaland from India. Now to see whether this joint peace talk between Assam & Nagaland’s Chief Ministers and NSCM will stop the terrorism at Nagaland or not.

Physical relationship with consent of both, not an offense under POCSO Act – Kolkata Court

Physical relationship with consent of both, not an offense under POCSO Act - Kolkata Court

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences, or POCSO, (Amendment) Bill, 2019, seeks to provide for stringent punishment to those engaging in sexual crimes against children, death penalty in cases of aggravated sexual assault, besides levying fines and imprisonment, to curb child pornography. The POCSO Bill proposes to protect the interest of vulnerable children in times of distress and ensure their safety and dignity.

The Bill has been approved by the Parliament, the Rajya Sabha on July 29, 2019 and the Lok Sabha passed it on August 1, 2019.

Incidentally, a 22-year-old man was convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act in a lower court for sexually harassing an 18-year-old girl. The accused approached a High Court challenging the lower court’s verdict. He claimed in court that the girl had already confessed to being in a relationship with him. When a young woman complains of sexual harassment, her age needs to be checked. Since the young woman had consented to the physical relationship, the harassment allegations can not apply to her.

During the hearing of the case, Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, in his significant observation, said that if there is physical consent of both parties, then only the man should not be blamed. This allegation cannot be brought against men alone as there are differences in the physical constitution of men and women.

The judge further commented, “The mental state of the accused in the case of sexual harassment against someone, Maturity and past events need to be examined. This is important for both the accused and the complainant.”

“The POCSO law should not be used to marry someone else,” the judge said. The court cannot sit with its eyes closed without understanding the reality. The cause of the incident needs to be known. If the complainant has to prove that she is a minor, then she has to know about her age, emotional consequences, and the surrounding situation.” According to the POCSO Act, if someone is 18 years and 364 days old, then a case will be filed under the POCSO Act. But is there any difference in the maturity of a person who is one day older than that age i.e. 18 years old? After learning that both the plaintiff and the accused were currently living separately, the court dismissed the charge against the youth under Section 37 of the Indian Penal Code, saying that Section 37 would be effective only if the plaintiff was forced to reconcile against her will.

Anambra 2021: We must be connected to the center says former Anambra Assembly Majority Leader

Ahead the November 6 Anambra State governoship election, the former Leader of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Humphrey Nsofor says there is urgent need for the state to be connected to the center.

Rt. Hon Nsofor who was speaking with journalists in his Udoka Housing Estate residence Awka said that Ndi-Anambra who are majorly international entrepreneurs will have a lot to gain if the state is connected to the government at the center.

“We have been sidelined for long, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has come up with so much propaganda against the government at the center, but the people now know better.

“APGA has been reduced to a family political party from Umuleri, it will not be in the best interest of our people to be away from the center, all the lies and propaganda against the government at the center must stop.” He said.

Rt. Hon Nsofor who has over forty years of political experience described the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 6 governorship election as a large hearted person who has the capacity to accommodate all and sundry.

The former Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly said that most of the negative publicity resulting in negative perception of Sen. Andy Uba are carried out by political opponents who are actually afraid of his wonderful and intimidating record.

“The APC governoship candidate, Dr Andy Uba is a cool headed politician, many of his political opponents normally throw mud at him to make him angry but he is above that kind of pettiness.

“Dr Sen. Andy Uba went through political apprenticeship for eight years under one of the best leaders in Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, many people were dropped in three or four years of Chief Obasanjo’s administration but he was with the master all through the eight years.

“He contested and won Anambra State governoship election but was stopped by the Supreme Court, he did not object, some politician would have thrown in huddles towards the execution of that judgment but he did not, the implication of that statesman’s act is that he is not desperate.

Dr Andy Uba was in the upper chamber of the National Assembly for eight years where he gave Anambra South senatorial zone an unprecedented representation, one of the bills he sponsored is what led to the recognition of Anambra State as an oil producing state.” Rt.Hon Nsofor explained.

Rt Hon Nsofor described the APC governoship candidate as a very humble, humane, kind and caring Christian who has the fear of God.

“I met Sen Andy Uba on August 28, 2006 when Chief Olusegun Obasanjo invited the third Anambra State House of Assembly to Aso Rock Villa, I can say with all sense of responsibility that he has the capacity and the connection to take Anambra State to her promised land.

“He is not reacting to mudslinging allegations against him because he does not want to be distracted and honestly that is why he is not bothered, he is a focused person and also result oriented.

“Andy Uba is not known for religious politics, I am very sure that he will usher into Anambra State a responsible and responsive administration everyone in the state will be proud of irrespective of their denominational leanings.” Rt Hon Nsofor concluded.

Female genital mutilation, disinheritance still a challenge in Anambra – RoLAC

Female genital mutilation, disinheritance still a challenge in Anambra - RoLAC

An advocacy group, Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC), has raised the alarm over the continued practice of Female Genital Mutilation, female disinheritance and male child preference in some communities in Anambra.

Lead Consultant with RoLAC, Prof. Mercy Anagbogu made the assertion in Awka, on Wednesday, at a Preliminary Findings Review Meeting with stakeholders.

The group, sponsored by the British Council, carried out a research in selected communities, to promote the campaign to end FGM and other Harmful Traditional Practices (HTP) in the state.

It was also aimed at sensitising communities on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP), Law as a framework to accessing justice.

Anagbogu said that FGM and HTP such as widowhood practices, denial of inheritance rights, and male child preference, posed severe health risks and violate girls’ and women’s right to dignity and bodily integrity.

According to her, it is unfortunate that inspite of the enactment of the VAPP Law in 2017, FGM and other harmful traditional practices are still prevalent in Anambra.

“During our research, these communities told us they have stopped female genital ‘Cutting’ because they no longer use blade, whereas they still do what is called ‘Numbing’.

“They use very hot water, Robb, Vaseline, or dusting powder to harshly robb and numb the genital part of a new born baby to retard the development of the clitoris.

“These communities found another method to achieve the same purpose which they believe will help curb sexual desire and tame girls or women.

“They also said there was nothing harmful about widowhood practices which includes compulsory mourning, not seen by others or allowed to bath or wash her clothes, female disinheritance, and male child preference, ” she said.

Also speaking, another Consultant with RoLAC, Mrs Uju Onyendilefu, said there was the need to raise awareness about FGM and harmful traditional practices as well as the legal consequences.

According to her, women mostly enforce these harmful practices on fellow women because they have accepted them as normal even when they contravene the VAPP Law

“We need to reduce the incidence of FGM/HTC through advocacy via the media and meaningful community engagement.

“We need to educate the communities on the existence of VAPP Law, platforms to access medical support for victims of FGM and framework for seeking justice for victims.

“We need to also support the implementation of VAPP Law to increase access to justice,” she said.

Mother sentenced to death in Purulia over murder of own child

Mother sentenced to death in Purulia over murder of own child

One Sanatan Goswami alias Thakur and Mangala Goswami have been convicted in the Purulia child murder case.

They were sentenced to death by a court after a four-and-a-half-year trial. The judge of Purulia court decided to give exemplary punishment for the mother who killed her child by conspiring with her boyfriend and husband.

On July 11, 2016, Mangala admitted her three-and-a-half-year-old daughter to Purulia Sadar Hospital with symptoms of fever, cold and cough. Doctors said the child had multiple wounds and scratches on his body at the time. They even said the child had blood stains on his lower body.

A medical board was formed to find out the cause of the wound and an X-ray showed seven needles pierced inside her body. Asked how the needle was tied, Mangala could not give a good answer. She later claimed that she was the housemaid of the former homeguard Sanatan. Sanatan has carried out ‘torture’ on her daughter.

The Purulia court on Tuesday ordered the execution of the two. They were found guilty of killing the baby girl by piercing her body with a needle. After that incident in 2016, the baby’s mother Mangala and Mangala’s boyfriend Sanatan hid in Uttar Pradesh. They were later arrested and the case was decided in Purulia court today.

In fact, the government’s lawyer in the case filed an application on Monday. As mentioned, the issues raised in the hearing clearly show that Mangala Goswami brutally murdered her daughter despite being a mother.

Purulia district is one of the twenty-three districts of West Bengal state in Eastern India.

The incident shook the basic ethics of the society. Mangala helped to kill the child by shaking hands with her boyfriend. So exemplary punishment is required in this case. That’s why the judge wanted more than a day to give the final sentence. And today the Purulia court announced the death sentence.

Mangala married Sanatan after she got divorced from her first husband. But the three-and-a-half-year-old girl became a thorn in their eyes and they had decided to kill her. So the two of them inserted seven needles into her body to kill the baby girl with a cold head.

Anwar Ali Ansari, the public prosecutor in the case, said: “The court has found both husband and wife guilty. The strongest punishments were meted out to the culprits. ” This time the verdict will be sent to the Calcutta High Court by the judge of Purulia court.

This incident in July 2016 caused a stir in the whole country. According to Purulia court sources, a total of 44 witnesses testified in the case. The case started on October 24 of that year after the chargesheet was filed 56 days after the complaint.

Dipankar Sarkar, then co-ordinator of Purulia Child Line, lodged a complaint with Purulia Police Station on July 14 of that year. The baby girl could not be saved even after seven needles were removed from her body through surgery.

She died at SSKM hospital at Kolkata on the night of July 22. Police then arrested her mother Mangala and Sanatan Goswami. She later claimed that she was the housemaid of the former homeguard Sanatan. Sanatan has carried out ‘torture’ on her daughter.

After hearing the death sentence in the court on Tuesday, Sanatan was completely silent. Although Mangala has repeatedly stated, she is innocent.

2023: PG Ohaneze Igbo Women Organization blasts Northern elders forum

2023 presidential election: PG Ohaneze Igbo Women Organization blasts Northern elders forum

The President General of Ohaneze Igbo Women Organization World Wide, Chief Hon. Mrs Calista Nkiru Adimachukwu has hit hard at the Northern elders forum for what she called their provocative statements ahead the 2023 presidential election.

Chief Mrs Adimachukwu in a press release made available to journalists on Tuesday said that that the North cannot produce Nigerian president without the support of people in the South.

The PG Ohaneze Igbo Women Organization condemned the recent statements by the Northern Elder’s Forum spokesperson, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, while speaking at the maiden Maitama Sule Leadership Lecture Series organized by the students wing of Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he stated that anyone who doesn’t want a Northerner as President in 2023 can leave the country when it happens.

“For avoidance of doubt, my reply to him on the 7th of July 2021 when the Southern Governors issued a communique on their meeting which was held on the 5th of July 2021, that the president of Nigeria should go to the South in 2023. I stated clearly then that the North cannot produce Nigerian President without the support of the South according to the Nigerian constitution.

“But since the North is very determined to Lord over the Southern Nigeria perpetually, then they can prepare their votes and vote a President of Northern Nigeria and not a President of the entire Nigeria.

“I think that will settle the arrogance of the Northern Elder’s Forum. At least there won’t be any further need after 2023 for the Northern Elder’s Forum to be making provocating statements on issues bothering on the Presidency of Nigeria.

“My response to Hakeem Baba-Ahmed on the 7th of July 2021 settled the matter. The era of arrogant disposition by the so called Northern leaders who claim to speak for the North is now a defunct story. A word is enough for the wise.

“The Ohanaeze Igbo Women Organization Worldwide wish to reteirate that we stand by the decision and stance of the Southern Governor’s Forum that the 2023 Presidency belongs to the South.”

Highest number of attacks on government officials recorded under BJP rule – NCRB

Highest number of attacks on government officials recorded under BJP rule - NCRB

The BJP government has brought back good governance in India – they claim!! Not only at the center, but in the 13 states where they and their allies are in power, good governance has returned everywhere! Such propaganda is going on throughout the year.

Since coming to power at the Center in 2014, the BJP government has been celebrating ‘Good Governance Day’ on December 25. However, the lantern of that good governance was leaked in the newly released report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of the central government.

According to the report, Uttar Pradesh is at the top of the country in terms of obstruction of work of government workers and severe injuries to them. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is one of two major political parties in India, along with the Indian National Congress. It is the current ruling political party of the Republic of India, since 2014. The information that came up in the report is a reflection of the real situation.

Bengal CID officials have been beaten up when they went to arrest a BJP youth leader from Uttar Pradesh who had threatened to kill Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The national crime report also revealed that the highest number of violations of any kind of government law is in the BJP’s own ‘brand’ of good governance, namely in Gujarat, the state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the NCRB report, the BJP-ruled states are among the top three in the country in terms of disruption of work of government workers and serious injuries to them. Uttar Pradesh is at the top. Assam is in the second place. Karnataka is in the third place

According to the current NCRB report, there have been 418 incidents of deadly attacks on government workers in Uttar Pradesh in just one year under sections 333 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code. 422 people were seriously injured. In the same period in Assam, the same number of people were seriously injured in 223 such incidents. On the other hand, there are 194 such incidents in Karnataka, another third BJP-ruled state. 203 people were injured.

According to the NCRB report, Gujarat is at the top of the list for violating government laws (Section 16 of the Indian Penal Code). In just one year, 2 lakh 26 thousand 909 people have broken the law there. Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are in the second and third place respectively. In these two states, there were 1 lakh 39 thousand 753 and 62 thousand 183 incidents of government violation during that period respectively.

Whereas another Indian state West Bengal is likely to have a much better result this time and again became the safest city of India. In another BJP ruled Indian state Gujarat.

What is the BJP saying about this sensational information? The BJP party’s one of the top official said that it is a matter of concern. Surely the BJP Party will review this report with the reality. However, the administrative structure of all the states are different.

Why Anambra poll will be difficult to rig – Ubah

Why Anambra poll will be difficult to rig - Ubah

The governorship candidate of Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the November 6 election in Anambra State, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah has restated his confidence in the credibility of the poll.

He said Anambra was too sophisticated for anybody to attempt to rig it, saying he had the mechanisms to announce the results before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ubah who spoke in Nnewi on Monday in reaction to a widespread fear that a certain political party had concluded plans to rig the poll, said a lot of factors had indicated that the election would be credible.

He said, “I have my own situation room, and I have over 80,000 canvassers in the state. We have as much as 500 canvassers in some wards, we have just a little over 5,000 polling stations in the state.

“We will have people in all of them, and let me tell you, once the election is over, we would have collated all the results and known the outcome, even before INEC announces the result.”

The lawmaker maintained that INEC had integrity to protect beyond the Anambra poll.

He added, “What people don’t understand is that we have an INEC chairman that also wants history to remember him positively. He also needs to show people that he is not a man that is found wanting. Remember that election is coming up in 2023.

“The general election is very critical, and the Anambra election is a signpost to how that one will go. If the INEC chairman compromises, then he would have shown that he is not a man to be trusted.

“It is only a rumour, and people are buying into it that a particular candidate has the ear of everybody and will rig the election, but it is not true. Even Mr President himself will not stake his credibility for Anambra election. He is already on his way out, so I wonder why he will want to destroy his personality by rigging Anambra election?”

Ubah said those who believed the election would be rigged were naive, because Anambra is a politically-aware state, and also ready to ensure that it protects its votes.

“Anambra is not a state that is backward, social media-wise. People are very aware here, and even before you release a wrong result, people would have had it on social media already, ” he stressed.

Provide us alternate shelter before demolishing our homes – Christians in Landikotal beg government

Provide us alternate shelter before demolishing our homes - Christians in Landikotal beg government

PAKISTAN: Christian families have appealed to the government to provide them with alternative shelter before going ahead to demolish their century-old homes in Landikotal.

The Daily Vendor Newspaper correspondent in Pakistan said, Arshad Masih, flanked by a number of Christian women and children, told a press conference on Monday that without proper notice, they were asked to vacate the homes. Masih said they have served as government servants and served at different government departments.

Arshad Masih said more than thirty christian families were living in the official compound in Landikotal before partition. He said on the short notice issued to them to leave their homes, Christian community across the country should raise a voice for them.

“Where will we go to if our children and women are thrown out of the homes as we heve no alternate shelter to move into”, said Masih. He added that it was not justice to pull out children and women from their homes and leave them on the streets.

He said the government should provide them shelter before the homes are demolished. They said they would resist if their homes were being demolished by force.

The local officials have issued notice to the Christian families residing in official compound to vacate the homes to extend the Landikotal jail. The officials said they had no other alternate option but the christians homes situated in the official compound had to be demolished to extend the Landikotal sub-jail.

Landikotal bazaar union president Jafar Khan Shinwari said it would be injustice to the christian families if they were made homeless.

Farmers in Western Kenya rejoice over market access from ventures

Farmers in Western Kenya rejoice over market access from ventures

For 10 years now, Fred Masinde has practiced tomato and water melon farming in his farm at Pinnacle area, Kanduyi Constituency in Bungoma County. He rotates the two crops each planting season in order to reap maximum benefits.

Initially, he grew maize and sugarcane but stopped after registering a string of losses, eventually deciding to settle on tomatoes and melons.

“I started with selling clothes at  Bungoma market. I then ventured into farming starting with sugarcane, before I moved onto maize but stopped due to poor prices,” said Mr. Masinde.

He does his farming on an acre piece of land. Over the years, Mr. Masinde, like most of the farmers in the County, has relied on customers who visit his home during harvesting to buy his farm produce, mostly at low prices.

Farmers in Western Kenya rejoice over market access from ventures 4

“Getting the market has always been a problem, now as we speak if you visit any market in Bungoma you will find one tomato is KShs.10. When customers come here; be it from within or far they want to buy a tomato at KShs.5. You cannot refuse because tomatoes are not like maize to be stored as you wait for market prices to improve,” says the farmer.

As such, over the years Fred Masinde toiled hoping that something happens so that he gets market access and be able to sell his produce at a favorable price.

About a month ago, as he was moving up and down to attract customers to his farm, he was attracted by music playing outside a store in Kanduyi, a few metres from Uwanja wa Ndege.

He moved closer and saw displays of tomatoes, Irish potatoes, cabbages and all manner of traditional vegetables. The store referred to as Andy’s Greens is being run by four youth, with an aim of providing market access to farmers in Western Kenya.

Mr. Masinde introduced himself as a tomato farmer and requested to know if he could supply his produce at the store. His wish was granted and every week, he supplies 80 kilograms of tomatoes at the store.

At Andy’s Greens, they pay KShs.50 per kilogram of tomatoes. That means every week, he is able to earn KShs.4, 000 from supplying his farm produce at the store. That translates to KShs.16, 000 per month.

Depending on weather patterns, Mr. Masinde harvests his tomatoes twice a week. He can harvest up to 100 kilograms of tomatoes per week, and with 80 kilograms already taken up by Andy’s Greens, it becomes easy for him to sell the remaining 20 kilograms to his other clients.

“Andy’s Greens have really assisted me. I now know that the moment I harvest, 80 kilograms of tomatoes are taken. They have given me a reason to continue working hard on my farm. Their payments are prompt,” he said.

He is now sure of a weekly profit margin of between KShs.3, 000 to Sh4, 000, compared to when he was not working with Andy’s Greens when he earned between KShs.1, 500 to Sh2, 500 weekly because of lack of customers who could take his products in bulk.

With a ready market now, Masinde’s major challenge is depending on rainfall to practice farming unlike other farmers in other parts of the Country.

“I urge the County Government of Bungoma to assist farmers to set up infrastructure for carrying out irrigation agriculture rather than depending on rain for agriculture. The reason why farmers in places like Mwea produce rice and tomatoes across the year is that they depend on irrigation farming.” He alluded.

Andy’s Greens store is operated by four like-minded youths; Chris Mbaya, Faith Ndanyo, Ken Nyukuri and Andrew Wekunda. All of them are University graduates.

Chris Mbaya did a course in hospitality management and tourism at the Cooperative University, graduating in 2018. Andrew Wekunda is a lawyer; Faith is a teacher while Ken Nyukuri studied business and commerce at the University.

According to Chris, Andy’s Greens is a brain child of their team leader Andrew Wekunda, who previously worked with the One Acre Fund Organization. Andrew initially knew the other three, making it easy for him to bring them together.

The store was opened in Bungoma mid 2020 purposely to have a place where farmers’ produce can be channelled at fair prices, before being moved on to consumers, said Chris.

“When we started, Andrew had a small farm where he had planted kunde. We used to pluck the kunde and hawk it in town. Later, we started deliveries to people’s homes who reached us through our Facebook page. Remember we started operations at the time when the government had shutdown markets to prevent spread of COVID-19,” he said.

They soon ran out of Andrew’s stock at the farm and settled on making trips to various markets around, majorly the Chwele market. From his previous hustles, Andrew had bought a van which was helping them to move from one market to another to get fresh farm produce so as to satisfy their market.

However, they were not making any progress because the largest amount of their earnings went into fuelling the van. After brainstorming, they decided to change their modes of operation and only focus on buying their products directly from farmers.

“There was a day we went out for field work to look for farmers and convince them to start supplying their produce to us at fair prices. We went all the way to Mt Elgon and spoke to farmers producing various products including tomatoes, Irish potatoes, cabbage and traditional vegetables,” Faith Ndanyo Said.

Chris says their intention has always been uplifting the farmer while supplying fresh produce to clients. Their aim was and remains giving farmers a ready market. Different organizations are training farmers, providing inputs to them but they do not train farmers on how to sell their farm products. We came in to help the farm get a ready market.”

The farmer only needs to call them whenever he/she is planning to harvest. From the store, they have purchased a lorry and managed to employ two drivers whose role is to pick agricultural produce from farmers. This in turn does away with the costs a farmer would have incurred while transporting the produce to the market.

At Andy’s Greens store, prices are favorable to both the farmer and the consumer. For instance, they purchase a head of cabbage at KShs.20 from the farmer and sell it at KShs.30. In most markets, the same size of cabbage goes for between KShs.40-Sh50.

Farmers in Western Kenya rejoice over market access from ventures 6

They buy a 100kg bag of Irish potatoes at KShs.1, 700 and sell it KShs.2, 200.

“Our prices lean so much on helping the farmer realize maximum benefits from his/her venture. The farmers we work with are happy because, for example, those who sell potatoes know that after two to three days, we are ready to take about 70 bags from them,” insisted Faith.

Their biggest challenge, however, is the rough terrains they have to scale to and from farms to pick the produce.

“Our lorry has broken down severally because of the bad roads especially to Mt Elgon, but that does not dampen our spirits,” said Chris.

Faith and Chris concurred that the store is paying big time. Their sales range from KShs.5000 to KShs.20, 000 a day.

“When we started, we had no salary but now there’s a salary at the end of the month. We have employed two drivers and four people for packaging, and all of them are on salary,” said Faith, who is an English and Literature teacher.

Press Freedom under attack as Police arrest 2 Journalists in Haryana

Press Freedom under attack as Police arrest 2 Journalists in Haryana
Woman holding cardboard paper with PRESS FREEDOM text and rusty sharp bare wire on dark background, conceptual image.

A suspected militant was arrested in Indian state Haryana. But while reporting the news, a journalist had provided wrong information about the location of the arrest of the militant. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led-government in Haryana ordered the arrest of the journalist for the ‘crime’.

The Daily Vendor Newspaper learnt that a case was also filed against another journalist in Ambala Cantonment.

Haryana is a state in India located in the northern part of the country. It was carved out of the former state of East Punjab on 1 November 1966. The ( BJP) Bharatiya Janata Party is one of two major political parties in India, along with the Indian National Congress. It is the current ruling political party of the Republic of India, since 2014 but not having presence in all states . The BJP is a right-wing party, and its policy has historically reflected Hindu nationalist positions. In Haryana, BJP is running the state government

Opposition political parties, including the National Congress, have blamed the Haryana government for the incident and they said that the ruling BJP government is strangling the freedom of the media.

According to Haryana Police, an FIR was lodged against journalist Sunil Brar and news editor Sandeep Sharma of the daily Bhaskar News Paper under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. Brar was arrested on Friday. Attempts are also being made to arrest Sharma. But, what is the crime of two journalists?

Punjab police on Wednesday arrested a suspected militant from Mardon Sahib village in Ambala, Haryana. Accused of plotting the explosion. The next day, the headline of the newspaper read, “Militants arrested near IOC depot in Ambala Cantonment, claim by Punjab Police”. However, the very next day, the newspaper published an amendment to the misconception about the place where the militants were arrested. Despite this, why action was taken against the two journalists?

Vijay Kumar, SHO of Ambala Cantonment, said a case has been filed against two journalists for publishing news without proper information. Brar and Sharma have created panic among the people by serving wrong news. Haryana police produced Brar in court on Saturday after his arrest. Deputy Magistrate Mukesh Kumar granted him land on a personal bond of Rs 50,000.

Opposition parties have been vocal against the BJP government in arresting the journalists. Veteran Congress leader Rohit Jain said the Supreme Court’s order in the arrest case had also been thumbed down.

The police did not give notice to the journalist before his arrest. Police have trampled on the democratic policy of Haryana Democratic Front and BSP. These arrests are an attack on the freedom of the press.

In India it is very common that Indian political parties pretend to uphold the “free speech” when journalists are attacked in other states, whereas, the same parties keep mum and ignore the outrage if a journalist is attacked in a state ruled by them

Anambra 2021: Andy Uba Most Maligned, says Chief Nwosu

Anambra 2021: Andy Uba Most Maligned, says Chief Nwosu

The chairman and CEO, SACON Group, Chief Sam Okey Nwosu says the Anambra State governoship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Sen Andy Uba is the most misunderstood and maligned personality because of his gentle and peaceful disposition.

Chief Nwosu an APC stalwart stated this during an interaction with journalists in Awka.

The international businessman said that all manners of allegations are heaped on the APC guber candidate because he is not known for noise making like many politicians.

The chairman and CEO of SACON Group pointed out that the allegation that Sen Andy Uba sold Anambra State owned Ikenga Hotels when he was the governor of the state for just seventeen days is most ridiculous.

“Political opponents can always cook up whatever they like against Sen Andy Uba because he is a quiet person, for crying out loud, how can someone sell Ikenga Hotels in just seventeen days he was in the saddle of leadership. Won’t there be evaluation and other processes before government asset is sold?”

“I can tell you authoritatively that the Uba brothers are not responsible for burning down some government facilities in Anambra, many top flight politicians including the Ubas were using my hotel facilities and I remember vividly that the then governor called me on phone and asked me to send them out of my hotel but I told him I am a businessman and cannot do that.

“The same people who burnt down some government properties came and set my hotel on fire, do you want to tell me that the same people who are being accused of commiting the crime also want to burn themselves in my hotel?” Chief Nwosu quipped.

He said emphatically that Sen Andy Uba is a very intelligent and accessible person who learnt statecraft and political perfection from the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

“We cannot afford to throw away a quality material like Sen Andy Uba on the grounds of fallacious allegations.” He insisted.

Chief Nwosu when asked to assess the performance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) controlled government, said that the Nigeria has fared better under the APC government.

“A government is always measured through infrastructural development, economy and security, in all these sectors, APC government has done relatively well.

“The second Niger Bridge is 95 percent completion. Out of the twenty years of Nigeria’s democracy, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was in power for sixteen years, the South East was totally abandoned except for appointments. Now APC government is working on eighty eight kilometer Enugu-Onitsha express way.

“The two hundred and forty two Enugu-PortHarcourt is also receiving attention, for me, the South East has benefitted more from APC government than it does when PDP was in power for sixteen years.” Chief Nwosu stated.

He said that the Anambra State governorship election is a unique opportunity for Ndi-Anambra to wake up and be connected to the center by voting for the APC candidate, Dr Andy Uba.

How Invaders Of IPMAN Secretariat Carted Away Cash, Burnt Marketers' Files - Chairman

More revelations have emerged about the activities of those who invaded the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) Enugu Depot Unit Secretariat on Thursday in the guise of enforcing a Supreme Court judgement.

Recall IPMAN had declared a one-day strike on Friday to protest what it called invasion and attack of its Secretariat by the Police against a subsisting court order.

Mr Chinedu Anyaso, chairman of Enugu who spoke to journalists said the masterminds led no fewer than 30 thugs under the protection of the Police to illegally break in and plunder the Secretariat.

According to him, I wish to sincerely thank all Enugu Marketers and the entire Depot Community for their support, solidarity, and show of love since the destruction, looting, and illegal entry into our Secretariat masterminded by an individual.

“The Policemen came in with one a Tout and a Charlatan in Onitsha who claimed to be IPMAN Chairman Anambra State.

“While in a meeting with my members, I was informed that Aguiyi in conjunction with the Sunny Big man brought in thugs with policemen and broke into our offices, carted away properties, money and documents.

“The most wicked of it all is the burning of Marketers files and office documents which we worked very hard to create. Since then the hoodlums have been occupying our Secretariat,” he said.

Anyaso said though the Police had denied any involvement in the lawlessness, video clips released by the culprits had proved they participated actively in the incident.

“We informed our National President Engr Sanusi Fari of the development who in turn contacted the Force Headquarters which denied any involvement.

“The Police claimed they only came to serve a letter of invitation, but videos and pictures shared by Aguiyi himself shows otherwise, that was why our National President to call for the one day warning strike,” he said

On how the crisis started, Anyaso said he had gone to deliver a letter at the Police Command in Enugu on Sept. 15 when the CP told him that some policemen from Abuja came in company of some IPMAN members to serve him and his members a letter of invitation to Force Headquarters Abuja.for enforcement of the Supreme Court judgment.

He said rather than wait for them to respond on a date to honour the invitation, the Police hoodlums invaded the office and looted it the following day being Thursday Sept. 16.

“I explained to him that the Enugu Depot Unit conducted its elections of which our term is still running and that if actually Chinedu Okoronkwo won an election as national President of IPMAN which he did not win, he should go to Abuja and fight for his seat.

‘Somebody who claimed he won the presidency of Nigeria cannot leave the person occupying the presidential sit and be fighting with state governors.

Anyaso said he would deploy every legal and legitimate tool to protect the mandate which was given freely and massively to him and his executive members by his members, while urging his colleagues to remain calm as the illegality would not stand.

Assassinated monarch’s son alleges threat to life, absolves IPOB

Assassinated monarch's son alleges threat to life, absolves IPOB

Prince ChineduL Edozieuno, first son to former traditional ruler of Mkpunando, Igwe Alex Edozieuno, who was assassinated by gunmen last week has raised the alarm over threat to his life.

He said he was not only being trailed, but has been receiving threat calls from anonymous persons.

The deceased, dethroned alongside 12 others that accompanied oil magnet Prince Arthur Eze to the Presidency last year, was killed on September 10, 2021 after Ezu River Bridge along Onitsha-Otuocha-Adani road area of the state.

Speaking to reporters Sunday, Edozieuno also expressed worry over Governor Willie Obiano’s indifferent disposition towards the calamity that befell the family despite being a native of the community.

He said, “My father and the government had been friendly and I am a Senior Special Assistant to the Governor. My father and the Governor are from the same town and were age mates.

“It is curious that since my father’s assassination, the Governor has not shown any concern. He has not called to commiserate with the family or a visit.

“Meanwhile, since I started reaching out to the police following the assassination of my father I have been trailed by unknown persons. This poses danger on my life.

“As soon as news of my father’s assassination broke out, we heard that some people started celebrating. I also receive calls asking me to drop the case. When I complained to the police, they asked me how I was sure they have hand in my father’s death.

Edozieuno called on the Presidency, Inspector-General of Police and security agencies to come to his rescue to ensure he was not killed by the same persons that killed the father.

He also debunked rumour linking his father’s assassination to Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN), insisting that killers of his father were not far from his kinsmen.

“Some people have tried to link my father’s death to IPOB. That is false and cheap propaganda because my father has no issues with them.

“My father’s death cannot be far from the autonomous community issue because influential people from Aguleri wanted the town to remain one. His death is a strong hatchet man’s job by some highly placed people.

“Some suspects are already in police custody while others we finger as the king pins are free boasting in our town and bragging that they have connections and that we have nobody to speak for us,” he added.

When contacted, Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga said the Police was yet to receive any formal complaint from the victim.

Northerners responsible for economic development in Rivers, Lagos – Masari

Northerners responsible for economic development in Rivers, Lagos - Masari

The Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari has opposed the collection of Value Added Tax (VAT) by states, saying the North contributes to the economic development of Lagos and Rivers.

Masari described the agitation over tax collection as a joke.
“What is Lagos without the rest of Nigeria? The market Lagos is boasting of is dependent on the larger part of the country. Benin Republic has a port, Togo has a port; do they have the population to back up the ports? Without us providing the demand part, what will be Lagos?” Gov Masari said in an interview with Daily Trust.

Katsina governor said further that both Rivers and Lagos were reliant on population from other parts of the country to sustain their economy, adding that states benefited from each other in the revenue equation.

“VAT serves them and us. We provide the bulk of the market because without the rest of the states what is Lagos or Port Harcourt?.” He quipped.

According to him, “Any state that thinks it can survive in isolation is joking. We provide the demand that makes Lagos what it is.”

Gov Masari did not speak on how northern states benefit from alcohol taxes generated from southern states while Sharia-backed state police in the north continue to confiscate and destroy alcoholic beverages that cross state lines.

On Thursday, southern governors acknowledged the power of the states to collect the consumer-based tax following the landmark judgement of the Rivers division of the Federal High Court.

The court held that the FIRS had no constitutional backing to collect taxes in the state and granted the power to collect the consumption tax to the Rivers government.
The revenue collection body had asked companies to ignore the court ruling and appealed the judgement, but Rivers and Lagos have ordered the enforcement of their Value Added Tax Law 2021.

Black Sunday in Anambra as unknown gunmen strike again, kill 3 policemen in Onitsha

Anambra State was thrown into panic again on Sunday morning as unknown gunmen reportedly killed three policemen in Awada area of Onitsha and also set their vehicle ablaze.

Many other persons were said to have sustained various degree of injuries during the attack.

Sources said that the incident happened around 9.00am when some worshipper were rushing to their different churches.

An eyewitness claimed that policemen always station their vehicle at the junction on daily basis as a security post and are known to brazenly extort motorists thereby causing traffic hold up in the area.
