Ten Hag criticized for substitution made against Chelsea on Saturday

…says ten Hag made “strange” decision to replace Jadon Sancho with Fred

Former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, has criticized Erik ten Hag’s “strange” decision to replace Jadon Sancho with Fred during their 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday.

United controlled much of the first half, although Marcus Rashford and Antony failed to take their chances.

Blues boss, Graham Potter, responded by making a tactical change in the 35th minute, replacing Marc Cucurella with Mateo Kovacic.

Potter’s decision helped stem the tide and allowed Chelsea gain a foothold in the game.

Ten Hag responded seven minutes after the break, by removing Sancho and bringing on Fred.

Scholes however, feels that decision backfired and had a negative impact on Bruno Fernandes.

“The subs were a little bit strange today. I thought Fred coming on when he did for Sancho didn’t really help the game.

“I thought Fernandes lost a bit of control of the game he had to come out to the left-hand side and wasn’t in the game as much,” Scholes said.
