Three injured as trailer loses control, rams into pickup in Onitsha

Three persons on Sunday sustained varying degrees of injury in a motor accident along Awka-Onitsha expressway, Onitsha, Anambra state.

The accident which occurred around 9.10am involved a Mack Trailer latched with a 40ft container and a white coloured Mitsubishi Pickup.

The trailer driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle as a result of brake failure and rammed into the Mitsubishi pickup, as it ascended on the concrete road demarcation.

Confirming the incident, the Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Pascal A. Anigbo said no death was recorded.

He said, “At about 9.10am today Sunday 5 July, 2020 a serious Road Traffic Crash (RTC) involving a Mack Trailer with registration number JJT57XA latched with a 40ft container and a white coloured Mitsubishi Pickup with registration number LND260XK, was recorded at New Tarzan Junction, along Awka-Onitsha expressway.

“A total of Ten (10) victims (9 male adults and 1 female adult) were involved in the crash. Three victims, (all males) sustained varying degrees of injury.

“The injured victims were rushed to Madueke Memorial Hospital by some good Samaritan before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team from Upper-Iweka Outpost.

“Operatives of FRSC are on ground managing the traffic, while arrangement to clear the obstruction caused by the trailer is in top gear.

“The Sector Commander, FRSC, Andrew A. Kumapayi reiterates the importance of ensuring that vehicles are checked and serviced regularly, especially the braking systems in articulated vehicles, before putting on the road.

“Drivers should always drive defensively to avoid unnecessary road mishaps.”
