Church collapses as man loses wife, three children in Anambra boat mishap Awesome Ekene A church building reportedly collapsed Sunday in Iyiowa Odekpe community Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. The tragedy is coming barely 24 hours an engine boat carrying about 85 passengers capsized at Umunnankwo Community of the Local Government Area, with many reportedly dead. According to reports, the church, Madonna Catholic Church building collapsed as a result of heavy flooding that has eaten up many parts of the building and also caused many damages in the area. Meanwhile, tears flowed Sunday at Ogbaru local government area as 10 additional bodies of Boat mishap victims were recovered. One of the most hit, was Mr Bernard Achonu who lost his wife and three children in the incident at the weekend. The man, who hails from Isiala Mbano in Imo State, failed to be consoled by his relations who gathered to await the bodies of their other loved ones. He resides in Mputu Community, where they are engaged in farm activities in the local government area. The late children were aged between two, four and six. He could not give the name of his wife and the children In tears, he disclosed that his family left in order to move to a safe place as the water has submerged almost all the communities in Ogbaru. He however, regretted that the engine boat according to what he was told, capsized due to dangerous waves. He was not alone, there were others who lost family members .They included Kenneth Ezi, Mathew and Sabastine Umeorji, and Dominic Dala- Amuzie . The five of them, expressed grief and shock over the incident, saying most of those who died in the ill- fated boat mishap were women and children. The sailor of the capsized boat, Mr. Desmond Amaugo from Ogwu-aniocha, said the total number of persons on board were 48 and not 85 as earlier reported. He narrated how the market women besieged his house and persuaded him to sail them to Ogbakuba but they couldn't make it due to the water waves. The sailor, said the wave knocked the boat against the pillars of Umunnakwo-Ossomala bridge. According to him, "all efforts made to stabilize the boat, failed because the wave was so severe." The boat capsized Friday evening at Umunnankwo in Ogbaru local government Area of Anambra State. Before the boat mishap at the weekend, virtually all the houses, roads, and markets in Ogbaru, had been submerged as a result of flooding The residents had all parked their farm produce and belongings along the flooded tarred road.
