We’ll shun vices capable of taking us back to ‘hellfire’ – Freed Anambra inmates vow

Five inmates of Correctional Service Center in Amawbia in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State have vowed not to be involved in any vices capable of returning them back to the facility.

The inmates, Chidozie Ikile, Chikwube Obiagu, Ebuka Afoba, Izuchukwu Nwosu, and Ozodo Uchechukwu made the pledge after they were granted freedom by a Non-Governmental Organization, Abu Mmaduaburochukwu Foundation.

Speaking separately to newsmen, the inmates described the Correctional Centre as hellfire, praying God to bless the foundation for making their freedom possible.

“We will not to be involved in any activities that will return us to this hellfire.

“We pray God to continue to bless the benefactor for making our freedom a reality,” they said.

Perfecting their bail conditions, Founder of the NGO, Chief Mmaduaburochukwu Attah said the gesture was part of the organisation’s goal to ameliorate suffering of the poor and downtrodden in society.

Attah, a real estate mogul and transporter said lifting people from poverty should not be left for government alone, stressing that it should be the duty of affluent individuals to always assist the less privileged around them.

“What you have seen here are things we have been doing for six years since we incorporated this foundation, and I will continue doing it as God blesses me,” he said.

Earlier, Deputy Controller of Corrections in the facility, Rev Solomon Uba appreciated the NGO for its commitment towards giving the inmates a sense of belonging.

Uba, represented by one of the officers in the Centre charged the freed inmates to eschew cultism, drug abuse and other social vices after being reintegrated into the society.

On her part, Zone 13 PPRO, SP Ihunwo Josephine urged the beneficiaries to be good ambassadors to their families, communities, their states of origin and the country at large.

She also advised them always to do the right thing at the right time.

The foundation also donated packs of toiletries and cartons of gala to the correctional facility.

The ceremony was held in the presence of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) officers, Nigeria Police delegates from Zone 13 Ukpo, led by its Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ihunwo Josephine, members of the press and management team of the Foundation.
