Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Anambra state chapter, Comrade Sir Humphrey Nwafor has reiterated determination of state workers to partner motorcycle (Okada) operators for the good of the people of the state.
Nwafor stated this while hosting executive members of Anambra state motorcycle operators union of Nigeria, led by its Chairman, Prince Bartholomew igwedibia at the federal Secretariat, Awka.
He disclosed that Okada operators were now entitled to all the benefits of an affiliate union since they were now an affiliate union of NLC.
He further commended motorcycle operators in the state for identifying with labour adding that Trade Union Congressb(TUC) and Joint Negotiating Council were members of organised labour, according to him, an injury to one is an injury to all.
“Since okada operators are now an affiliate union of NLC, there is need to work as a team to achieve success in the sector.
“Invitation will be extended to the state chairman of motorcycle operators and his secretary to attend the state Executive council meeting of NLC,” he added.
Earlier, state chairman motorcycle operators union of Nigeria, Prince Bartholomew Igwedibia said the visit was targeted at creating awareness and to sanitize the okada operations in the state by getting rid of hoodlums operating under the umbrella of motorcycle operators.
He said his members were favourably disposed to work with the government of the day for the attainment of success.
It would be recalled that during the inauguration of executive commitee of okada union recently, South-East zonal leader of the union, Hon Chief Boniface Okonkwo, a former member of the state Assembly pleaded with government to consider lifting ban on motorcycles in urban areas of the state.
According to him, motorcycles are not the only means of transportation used by criminals, stressing that the daily contributions by okada operators impact positively on the Internally Generated Revenue of the state.
