Court Awards N.5m Compensation to Child Victim of Violence

The Anambra State Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court, sitting at the Chief Magistrate’s Court, Awka has ordered one Chinyere Ifesinachi, a defendant standing trial before the Court to compensate one Miss Idimmachukwu with the sum of N500,000.

The case relating to violence is contrary to the Violence Against Persons, Prohibition and Protection, Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria, 2017.

The defendant, Ifesinachi, 25, was said to have physically abused Idimmachukwu, her House Help, in Onitsha, the commercial city of the State.

The presiding judge, His Worship, Genevieve Osakwe directed that before the money could be accessed, the victim’s parents shall open bank account in her own name, with her mother and the Assistant Chief Registrar (ACR) of the Court, as co-signatories to the account.

She categorically stated that the account would serve for the girl child’s education, warning that every expenditure made in respect of the account must be accounted for, to avoid unnecessary spending, especially, on the parts of the parents.

The case was further adjourned to August 2, 2023, for report of compliance to the order of Court.

Daily Vendor gathered that since Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo took custody of the victim from a popular comedian, Lord Zeus and later handed her over to her family, Nigerians in 

diaspora have been donating money to the welfare of the child, as well as award of scholarship.
