Anambra community banishes ex-lawmaker

People of Nsugbe community in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State on Friday said they have ostracized former Senator Obi Igbeke popularly known as Ubanese over alleged actions it termed inimical to the progress of the community.

The people who warned that no indigene of the town would associate with him, also placed a fine of N1 million for him to pay to be accepted back as one of their own.

They said they would only accept the money from the ex-lawmaker after he might have washed himself of all misdeeds leveled against him.

Igwe in Council and Senior Chiefs in the town had earlier in a meeting held at residence of head of all Chiefs in the community, Obi Paul Nwankwo found the Ex-Senator guilty of several allegations.

The allegations included forceful snatching of people and community lands, arbitrary arrest of eight youths in 2000 who were taken to police authorities in Awka whose whereabouts are still unknown till date, among others.

Protesting against the ex-lawmaker immediately after the verdict was issued, the Umuadas of the town (female born of Nsugbe), carried playcards with varying inscriptions, “Ubanese free Charles Obodoechina”, “justice for our eight missing children”, “Ubanese let the poor Nadis to live” among others.

The protesters, led by Hon. Mrs. Eucharia Attah, who said she was standing in for the women leader, Mrs. Mgboyibo Nwakasi matched round the community shouting, “Ex- Senator Ubanese you have committed enough abominable actions against the people of the town, we don’t need you again in Nsugbe.

On their part, former Chief Security Officer of the town, Hon. Obi Onyedika Dibua, Nsugbe Youths President, Hon. Chukwunonso Onwuzuruko and kinsman of Ex-Senator, Nwabunwanne Christian appealed to government and well-meaning individuals in the community to rescue them from Igbeke actions.

But in a swift reaction, the ex-Senator dismissed the allegation as tissues of lies fabricated by few disgruntled elements in the town envious of his achievements.

He said at no time did he arrest any innocent youth and dumped in police cell, masterminded their killings nor forcefully snatched people lands as being alleged by his traducers.

“These envious elements have been going about the town using innocent poor members of the community to smear the good name I have acquired through the years,” he added.
