Why Obi Cubana was arrested, detained — EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, on Monday arrested a popular socialite and businessman, Obinna Iyiegbu, known as Obi Cubana, for alleged money laundering and tax fraud.

An unconfirmed report has it that the commission has also confiscated his passport.

The Daily Vendor Newspaper learnt that the seizure of his travel document was to prevent him from leaving Nigeria while the investigation lasts.

It was also learnt that the anti-graft agency quizzed the Anambra-born businessman for the second day on Tuesday at its Abuja office.

The club owner got into the spotlight in July 2021 when he hosted an ostentatious burial for his late mother in Oba, Anambra State.

According to sources, over 100 cows were killed during the burial ceremony, while guests gifted him over 250 cows.

Obi Cubana’s lavish display of wealth set tongues wagging after the event, with many Nigerians wondering about the source of his wealth.

The Anambra-born Obi Cubana in October, 2021 clinched the award for the Man of the Year, defeating the likes of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State; Chairman, UBA Group, Mr Tony Elumelu; and Chairman and founder of BUA Group, Mr Abdul Rabiu.

It was learnt that the businessman was voted by Nigerians at home and in the diaspora via online platforms in a 14-day Leadership Excellence Awards.

The Cubana Group boss emerged winner with 2,667,845 votes, while Makinde, Elumelu and Rabiu had 1,015,224, 848,652 and 819,562 votes respectively.

Following his Monday arrest and detention by the EFCC, some young Nigerians have taken to social media to vent their anger on the commission.

An Instagram user and son of the Director-General of the Department of State Services DSS, Yusuf Bichi, Abba, lent his weight behind Obi Cubana, stating that not every wealthy person in the country is fraudulent.

Abba, who is a footballer took to his verified Instagram account, abba__bichi, immediately after the detention of Cubana to declare his support for the Cubana Group boss.

Abba uploaded a ravishing photo of a smiling Cubana and captioned it, “A man of honour and dignity”, adding that not every wealthy person is fraudulent.

The post which attracted over 160 comments had several users cheering his support for Cubana, while some accused Abba of supporting “yahoo boys”.

A user, @nadiaibrahimismail, wrote, “@abba__bichi you’re not ashamed your father is the DG SSS, a responsible person you’re here supporting yahoo boys

abba__bichi immediately fired back, “Go and prove that okay, not everyone with money is into fraud, you idiots support politicians with money and find it hard to see any good Nigerian with money! Indeed you are an illiterate of the highest order.”

Another user, @bafanabee, tackled Abba, saying he shouldn’t have declared support for Cubana, but the DSS DG’s son replied, “If my father is DSS (DG), so what?”

A user who supported “@abba__bichi sad. I just weep when I see some comments. It’s painful to read,” Isokenodigie stated.

Abba then retorted, “@isokenodigie they are politicians puppet that’s why! Imagine a sensible person will choose a politician over a hardworking man! That’s why Nigeria is messed up.”

A source revealed that Obi Cubana is still in detention and will be released when he has satisfactorily given answers to all questions relating to the allegations against him.

The source stated, “Obi Cubana has not been released, he is still having quality sessions with investigators over alleged money laundering running into millions of naira and tax fraud.
