Wake up to your Corporate Social Responsibilities – CSOs urge firms

…says Corporate bodies are under obligation, as a Social and Civic responsibility to support the State and its citizens

Anambra Civil Society Network (ACSONET) a foremost citizen and Non State Actors stakeholders group, has implored Business organizations to wake up to their Corporate Social Responsibilities by assisting and supporting displaced citizens across the State, who are suffering untold hardships in various IDP camps and holding centres.

The Leader of the group, Prince Chris Azor, who stated this while responding to inquiries by newsmen during the events marking this year’s World Development Information Day, said the call became necessary following recent flooding ravaging most parts of the country.

He said , “Flooding and sundry natural disasters are among serious existential threats to development regularly confronting humanity at large. It’s therefore, incumbent on all patriots to come to the aid of victims with a view to ameliorate their sufferings.

“Corporate bodies who make their living in the State are under obligation, as a Social and Civic responsibility to support the State and its citizens in not only momentary assistance, but helping to build back communities and livelihoods badly affected by the disaster. This is global best practice. And should be complied with, as a way of achieving sustainable development.”

Recall that Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR had called for support by the National Emergency Management Agency, all levels of government, organizations and good-spirited individuals, to help alleviate the hardship faced by people displaced as a result of flooding, ravaging the Country at large and Anambra state in particular.

Governor Soludo made the call when he visited some of the IDP Camps in the State.

The Governor in his speech said although Anambra State Government was doing everything possible to alleviate the sufferings of the people, the latter needed the support now and afterwards because their houses, properties and farmlands were submerged under water.

The Federal Government through NEMA, recently released relief materials mainly food and non food items to flood victims in Anambra.

There are also, reports that help is already coming from well meaning and patriotic Nigerians.

Corporate bodies and other well meaning individuals in the State are therefore obligated to offer support and assistance.

This year’s floods have been described as Nigeria’s worst since 2012.
