Effort by Edo State government to restore electricity back to some communities in Orhionmwon Local Government Area (LGA) has suffered a huge setback as thieves vandalised newly installed stepdown transformers at Oghada community.
The 2.5MV/3311VA transformers installed in August is expected to benefit Evbuobanosa, Iru, Oza, Oghada, Ofien, Idudolor, Ugbeze, Evbuohen, Igbanke, Ago-Ogbeide, Uvbe, Ugbogiri, Ugomoson, Ugboayon, Ugoneki, among others.
The Daily Vendor Newspaper however gathered that in the early hours of Monday 25th of October 2021 the vandals took advantage of poor security arrangement in the area to steal the equipment’s armoured cables.
The incident further dash the hopes of inhabitants of the affected communities who had anticipated the restoration of power to their area, after years without electricity as many still depend heavily on generators to power their electrical appliances.
Those who could not afford generators visit mobile phone charging outlets to charge their gadgets at a fee, a situation that has forced many to migrate from the predominantly agrarian area.
“Some people came on Sunday (24th October 2021) to video it; then on Monday (25th October 2021) the transformers was vandalized, painful;
“We are shock that this is happening now, even we earlier believe that there will be light soon since they brought the new stepdown transformer”, an inhabitant of Oghada community lamented to our correspondent
According to the inhabitant who preferred anonymity, vigilantes in the area should be profiled and empowered with the necessary working tools to enable them carry out their duties effectively.
The electrification project, aimed at addressing the perennial power problem in the Orhionmwon and Uhunmwode communities was being executed by Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission (EDSOGPADEC).
