US to Enhance Pakistan’s Customs Intelligence capacity

…Assures support to further strengthen liaison and coordination between the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Foreign Law Enforcement Community

PESHAWAR: A high level United States delegation of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Department of Justice met with Director Customs Intellegence on Friday.

The USA delegation was led by the Country Attaché for Pakistan Jaffrey A Konvalinka.

The DG Customs explained to the delegation the core functions of customs Intelligence and highlighted the organizational operations. 

DG Custom told the US embassador that they carry out its operations on the basis of credible information. He said It had fairly good expertise on gathering of information and success rate of its hits was more than 90 percent.

He however, said that support of DEA of US Government would certainly improve Pakistan’s customs intellegence capacity.

Jaffrey said that the US drug enforcement administration was established in 1973 and today it had more than four thousand employees located in hundreds of offices across the country.

He added that around the department fulfil its duties around the world to achieve its goals. He said the primary function of DEA was interdiction of controlled substances throughout the world by collection, analysis and dissemination of information on their movement.

He assured assistance of US Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Justice  in capacity building of Directorate General of Customs Intelligence on speedy information gathering and quality post seizure investigations. Opening of dedicated communication channel for improved coordination between the two agencies was also agreed during the meeting.

The US  Attaché for Pakistan also assured support to further strengthen liaison and coordination between the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Foreign Law Enforcement Community (FLEC) to meet new and emerging challenges with respect to narcotics interdiction in Pakistan and the region.
