Attorney general Bill Barr has resigned after giving Donald Trump and update on the Justice Department’s review of voter fraud allegations in the 2020 election, “and how these allegations will continue to be pursued”.
His resignation was announced by Trump in a tweet just as the Electoral College confirmed Joe Biden as the president elect.
Barr’s resignation follows Michigan congressman Paul Mitchel quitting the GOP for his party embracing “unfounded conspiracy theories”.
“By essentially pushing out Mr Barr, the president showed once again that loyalty, for him, is a one-way street. The attorney general told an interviewer late last month that the Justice Department had not found any evidence of the widespread voter fraud Mr Trump and his campaign lawyers are alleging.
“In Trump World, that’s a cardinal sin.”
