Unknown Gunmen Attack Community in Taraba, Kill 4, Burn 100 Houses, Shops

Unknown Gunmen on Friday invaded Dan-Anacha village in the Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State, killing four people and burning homes.

There has been uneasy calm in Dan-Anacha following the renaming of the village by the state government from Dan-Anacha to Kwararafa.

Tiv have been locked in a fierce battle with Jukun over  who owns the village.

Residents told our correspondent that gunmen invaded the village at about 3pm, shooting and burning houses, resulting in the death of four people.

A trader, who gave his name simply as Emeka, told newsmen that his shop was burnt in the attack.

Emeka said the gunmen operated from 3pm to 5.30pm.

According to him, the hoodlums burnt over 100 houses and shops.

Ex-Special Assistant to Governor Darius Ishaku, Jerry Tyolanga, who comes from the village, confirmed the attack.

A resident of the village, Tanko Mohammed, told reporters that calm had returned to the village following the deployment of additional security forces.

Mohammed said many people who fled the village following the attack were taking refuge in nearby Sabon-Gida and Tella communities.

Spokesman for the police in the state, DSP David Misal, who confirmed the incident, however said details of the attack were still sketchy.

He said, “The Commissioner of Police has since dispatched a team to the area and I will give you information about the attack as soon as they are back.”
