UNIZIK SUG disowns spokesperson over Police criminal allegations, apologizes

…the SUG spokesman had accused SPACS unit of the police of raiding, intimidation, thuggery, criminalism and immorality, as well as invading the students lodges and forcefully collecting their phones, laptop and other valuables

The Students Union Government (SUG) of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State on Monday apologized to the State Police Command over allegations of raid, thuggery and other forms of criminality in its hostels in the ifite area of Awka.

The Public Relations Officer, Comrade, Ikechukwu Dikeojo had issued a memo accusing the Special Anti-cultism Squard (SPACS) unit of the police of raiding, intimidation, thuggery, criminalism and immorality, as well as invading the students lodges and forcefully collecting their phones, laptop and other valuables.

He issued a 24hour ultimatum to the Commissioner of Police to call the SPACS to order and return all valuables to the students, threatening to block the entrances of the town if the demands were not met.

But addressing newsmen on Monday, the SUG President, Comrade Charles Ijeomah disassociated the body from the memo, absorbing the police of the allegations.

He said, “We the apex body of the Union retrieve our memo through the office of the PRO. After a thorough investigation, we’re convinced that it was not the police that raided the lodges of students in ifite on Sunday morning, January 22, 2023.

“We apologize for the damages it may have caused to the police and other affected bodies. We commend efforts of the police and entire police force for securing the students community.

“We’re aware this is a heaculean task. But we know the ifite area is a small place when compared with other areas the CP has conquered. We assure all security agencies of our cordial relationship and information sharing.”

Ijiomah also called on the Federal government to build more hostels in the school environment, stressing that such move would go a long way in addressing the incessant attacks on the students.

He said, “Why students are living outside the campus is because of limited hostels in the institution. We call on the Federal government to build more hostels.

“This is a federal institution and we have lots of lands that can accommodate as much hostels as possible so the students can feel more secured and sleep with their two eyes closed.

Also speaking, Financial Secretary, National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Zone F, Comrade Okafor Ernest, appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali to create a police division in the area to assist in curbing the insecurity around the university community.

“We also appeal to the Inspector General of Police, as a matter of urgency, to give us a division in the area to assist in curbing the insecurity and robbery attacks around the community,” he said.
