The United Nations (UN), has expressed dismay at the actions of mutiny soldiers in Mali leading to the arrest and detention of Malian President, Prime Minister and other top government officials, also demanding for their immediate and unconditional release.
A statement by Guterres’ spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said “The Secretary-General strongly condemns these actions and calls for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and rule of law in Mali.
“To this end, he demands the immediate and unconditional release of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and members of his cabinet.”
“Guterres is following the unfolding developments in the capital Bamako “with deep concern.”
“The secretary-general reiterates his calls for a negotiated solution and peaceful resolution of their differences.
“The secretary-general urges all stakeholders, particularly the defence and security forces, to exercise maximum restraint and uphold the human rights and individual freedoms of all Malians,” Dujarric added.
The DAILY VENDOR reported on Tuesday, that soldiers in Mali had arrested the country’s President, Ibrahim Boubacar and Prime Minister, Boubou Cisse.
The mutiny soldiers, on Tuesday, rounded up senior government officials in Kati town and other locations with thousands of citizens jubilating on the arrests.
There had been demands from Malians for Keita’s resignation, leading to protests that raged for about 3 months, in which dozens lost their lives.
The President’s removal on Tuesday came after interventions by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
