UN Identifies cause of coup in Africa

The United Nations (UN) says resurgence of coup in Africa, particularly in the West, is the outcome of political practices against the aspirations of the people.

Head of UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) made the assertion while briefing the Security Council on Monday at the UN headquarters in New York.

Saleh, the UN Special Representative for Central African Republic, expressed concern about the situation in Central African Republic, Mali, Sudan and Guinea.

In August 2020, mutineers in Mali, headed by Colonel Assimi Goita, ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

In September 2021, soldiers in Guinea, led by Col Mamady Doumbouya, overthrew President Alpha Conde, who trained and armed them.

In October 2021, there was a coup in Sudan after a failed attempt weeks earlier. The military later reinstated civilian authority, though still part of government.

Saleh said that West Africa and the Sahel were making progress in many areas but observed the struggle with insecurity, “which risks reversing hard-won advances”.

The envoy hailed the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for its efforts in Mali, Guinea and affirmed UNOWAS support for a return to civil leadership.

He informed UN Council members of progress in border negotiations involving Cameroon and Nigeria, and elections in Gambia and Cape Verde.

“These examples confirm the attraction of democracy, as the surest vector for shaping the future of communities”, the Special Representative noted.

Meanwhile, the Director-General, UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Ghada Fathi Waly has also briefed Council members.

The official said the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) remained an area of interest due to incidents along the West African coast such as kidnappings for ransom.

In October, Russian marines, in response to distress calls from MSC Lucia and Nigerian Navy (NN), repelled pirates that boarded the container ship near Agbami Oil Terminal.

2021 saw a number of military exercises in the GoG. The NN carried out joint drills with counterparts from countries including the United Kingdom and the United States.
