Two die in BRT and Commercial bus crash

Two people were said to have died, while several others sustained injuries in a crash that involved a Bus Rapid Transit BRT and a commercial bus on the Agege end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos State.

It was gathered that the incident happened at Ile-Epo on Sunday, around 8pm when the two vehicles had a head-on collision.

According to sources, the Ile-Epo side of the expressway was closed due to the ongoing rehabilitation works on the road, and this prompted the commercial bus driver to drive on the BRT lane.

Residents said, drivers are allowed to ply the BRT lane due to the construction work.

But they narrated that the bus driver was on a top speed, and overtook other motorists before crashing into the BRT vehicle, which was coming from the opposite direction.

A source who claimed to have witnessed the accident, blamed it on the impatience of the bus driver.

“He should have exercised patience and followed others on the lane which commercial buses were allowed to use. Instead, he tried to go in the opposite direction and that was what caused that accident.”

A driver also faulted the incessant closure of the Ile-Epo-Super side of the road, which he said was narrow and always flooded.

A resident said she saw when the vehicles were towed away on Monday.

“I heard that two people died and many other passengers were injured in that accident,” she added.

The Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Olusegun Ogedengbe, however said he was not aware of the crash.
