Truck plunges into gutter to avert deaths in Anambra

It would have been a black Friday in Udala Obosi, Anambra state if not for the decision of the driver of an articulated vehicle to veer off the road and crashed into the gutter along Nkpor-Obosi road in the area.

The incident which occurred around 11am involved a Volvo articulated vehicle, with two persons on board.

According to an eyewitness, the driver on noticing that the brakes had failed, veered into the gutter, to avoid hitting other vehicles.

“There would have been lots of casualties in this place if the truck driver had not decided to veer off the road,” he said.

The Sector Public Education Officer,
Federal Road Safety Corps, Pascal Anigbo, who confirmed the incident, attributed the crash to brake failure and loss of control.

He said, “At about 11am today Friday 12 June, 2020 a minor Road Traffic Crash involving a Volvo articulated vehicle, without registration number, was reported to have occurred at Udala Obosi, Nkpor-Obosi road.

“The crash was caused by Brake Failure and Loss of Control. Two male adults were involved. No injury and no death was recorded.

“FRSC rescue team from Upper-Iweka Outpost are on ground managing traffic, while the vehicle is being towed to safety by a private tow truck company.

“The Sector Commander FRSC, CC Andrew Kumapayi reiterates the importance of ensuring that vehicles, especially articulated vehicles are checked and well serviced before plying the highway.

“He also admonishes drivers to always drive defensively as most Road Traffic Crashes are avoidable.”
