Truck crushes Cyclist riding & making telephone call to death

Residents of Owerri the Imo State capital were thrown into fear yesterday, over reaction of no fewer than fifty northern cyclists, who were said to be protesting the death of one of their members, a commercial cyclist from the north, who reportedly fell off his motorcycle while riding and making a telephone call and was crushed by a truck loaded with chippings.

The incident, it was gathered led to serious pandemonium as his northern colleagues trooped out to protest the death.

A source revealed to our correspondent that the protesting cyclists refused to allow the deceased body to be taken away by the police, the commotion caused was said to have lasted about an hour, before reinforcement was sent from the state police command. The corpse was later moved to the morgue and the truck taken to the station.

An eyewitness who spoke to THE DAILY VENDOR correspondent said the deceased was riding with one hand while using the other hand to answer a telephone call when he met his sudden death.

According to him, the cyclist hit a bump and lost control of the motorcycle, which resulted in him running into the loaded truck that was coming from behind.

“The angry northern protesters (colleagues of the deceased) wanted to lynch the truck driver and set his vehicle ablaze, but for the timely intervention of security personnel, both the driver and his truck were saved and taken to the police station,” he said.
