No fewer than 22 houses were swept away by gully erosion at Obeleagu Street and Nkissi Aroli axis in Onitsha Inland Town, Anambra State.
THE DAILY VENDOR learnt that the erosion, occasioned by a heavy rainfall the previous day, reportedly claimed property worth hundreds of millions of naira.
Many residents were said to have sustained injuries as the affected buildings were falling and crashing into the huge gully prompted by the rampaging flood.
Some of the victims were seen trying hard to salvage their belongings while those whose houses were under threat were parking away.
National President, Onitsha Improvement Union, Sir Chike Ekweogwu, during an inspection visit to the disaster scene, called on both state and federal governments to come to the aid of the victims and also tackle the disaster promptly.
Ekweogu who led a powerful delegation of his members, in company of the Onitsha North Local Government chairman of the Union, Akunne Chuka Odiakosa regretted that inspite of state and federal government authorities’ last year visit to the area, nothing was done to salvage the situation.
