Traders groan as fire guts Nnewi market

Property worth millions of Naira were on Saturday night gutted by fire in Okpuno Egbu Market, Umudim Nnewi, Anambra State.

The inferno which started around 10pm, affected parts of the market.

The State Fir e Chief, Engr Martin Agbili confirmed the incident, saying no life was lost.

He said, “Anambra State Fire Service, Awka, Nigeria received the distress call at about 2225hrs (10.25pm) of 01-01-2022 of an outbreak at Okpuno Egbu Market, Umudim Nnewi.

“Our truck and Firefighters at Nnewi were deployed immediately to the incident scene.

“At the same time, Trucks and Firefighters were also deployed from Awka to Nnewi for assistance.

“At the moment, the outbreak is under control.

“As at the time of this report, the cause of the outbreak is unknown but will be ascertained after investigation.

“There is no loss of life but the inferno affected parts of the Market but we were able to control it from further spread during the fighting.

“We later left the incident scene at about 0230hrs (2.30am) of 02-01-2022.

“I want to appreciate the public and security agencies for their assistance during the operation. Also want specially appreciate all my Firefighters because of our sleepless nights in ensuring the safety of Ndi Anambra.”
