Three policemen, two others killed as gunmen attack Enugu

No fewer than five persons including three police officers were reportedly killed by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers in Enugu State.

A source revealed that one person was also kidnapped by the gunmen. 

According to the source, the two other persons killed during the attack were civilians.

The incident happened at New Haven area of Enugu North Local Government Area of the state capital on Wednesday night.

Sources said the attack occurred around 10:30 pm in front of St. Francis Supermarket at Block Bus stop.

The gunmen were reported to have stormed the area and engaged the policemen on stop-and-search duty in a gun duel.

“Unfortunately, three policemen were overpowered and shot dead. The hoodlums also took away their guns and abducted one person,” one of the sources said.

Another source said that two civilians caught during the gun duel were also among the people killed, while the hoodlums reportedly abducted one man.

However, unconfirmed report has it that the two civilians that were reportedly killed were gunmen that succumbed to the police gunfire.

A source said a security alert sent out by nearby residents read: “It happened at block bus stop in front of frank supermarket.

“Three policemen down already. Guys for our information, incase we still dey outside avoid new Haven.

“Two battered police men are still lying lifeless here.”

The message was accompanied by a video which showed the dead policemen inside the gutter.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, is yet to react or confirm the incident as message sent to his phone was not responded to as at press time.
