Texas mayor resigns after telling residents in desperate need of electricity and heating that ‘only the strong survive’

A Texas mayor has resigned following a Facebook post that appeared to tell residents to fend for themselves after a deadly, record-breaking winter storm left much of the state without power on Tuesday.

As mayor of Colorado City at the time, Tim Boyd wrote an insensitive message for people desperate for heat, water and power, saying “only the strong will survive, the weak will [perish].”

“No one owes you [or] your family anything; and it is not the responsibility of the local government to support you in such difficult times!” He said.” Sink or swim, it’s your choice! The city and county, and the electricity provider or any other service don’t owe you anything! I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn handout.”
