Tension as Ubah, Uba, Azubuogu clash in Nnewi

There was uneasy calm at the Nnewi North Local Government secretariat in Anambra State on Sunday following heavy shooting ocasioned by alleged clash between three Senatorial Candidates in the area.

Anambra South Senatorial Candidate under Young Progressive Party, Ifeanyi Ubah, and Chief Chris Uba as well as member of the House of Representatives, Hon Chris Azubogu were named to have engaged in a battle following alleged plans to falsify election results.

The secretariat serves as INEC collation centre for Anambra South Senatorial District election, where the trio are contenders.

The Nation gathered that the shooting during the clash compelled people at the scene, including journalists, supporters and even INEC officials to scamper for safety.

A source said, “Azubogu invaded the secretariat with thugs and forced his way into the collation centre, where he and Chris Uba had hijacked ballot papers that were being counted.

“They were about to move out of the premises, when Ifeanyi Ubah who had been alerted suddenly stormed the area, blocking them from leaving.

“The situation caused heavy gunfire, with Ubah gallantly confronting Azubogu and dispossessing him of the results he was about to make away with.”

The source however said Chris Uba was not lucky, as he was beaten by many voters after his vehicle was intercepted by Ubah who took the materials he had confiscated.

“He ran out of his vehicle and the supporters used the opportunity to catch him. Azubogu was luckier as he refused to step out of his bulletproof vehicle,” the source added.

Meanwhile, media aide to Azubogu, Emeka Onyia has insisted his principal was at the secretariat to submit a petition.

Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, when contacted, said he was unaware of the incident.

“No such information before me,” he said.
