Police in Benin City, Edo State capital has refused to continue to take responsibility for the medical bills and well-being of 15-years old Opeyemi Suleman who was hit in the neck by stray bullet fired by a yet to be identified operative.
A trigger-happy cop attached to Okhoro police division shot the teenager, while after a car carrying young men suspected to be internet fraudsters, popularly called ‘yahoo boys’, on Friday 3rd December 2021.
The operative in company of another officer near a commercial tricycle park in the area fired shot apparently to scare the occupants who refused to stop, before he released another bullet that hit the teenager at her mother’s shop opposite the park.
Officers, led by CSP Mathew Kalu, in charge of the division where the unfortunate incident took place showed concerns after the victim was rushed to nearby University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
CSP Kalu took responsibility for her medical bills, but later discontinue as he was said to be using his personal funds.
It was however gathered that, after the Okhoro DPO stopped catering for the bills, the victim’s family joined by the shooter’s continued with the treatment until she was discharged on Monday 20th 2021.
According to the victim’s parent, the girl has since then been writing in pains at home due to the bullet that is still lodged in her body, three weeks after the incident.
“we no fit sleep yesterday night; she (Opeyemi) complain of belle pain throughout the night, so as day break, na we rush her go another hospital for Ekiadolor where dem give her medicine to stop the pain. But dem (UBTH) still say make we come again on Thursday (30th December)”, the victim’s mother told The Daily Vendor Newspaper in pigin on Friday
She explained that, family of the shooter operative said to be detained at Edo police headquarters wants them (victim’s parents) to “go write statement” so that he (shooter) can be released from detention to go “find money” to care for their daughter.
