William Burns, head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (ISI), met with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on Tuesday. Doval later met with Russian National Security Adviser Nikolai Petroshev on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Taliban announced their new government. The Prime Minister is Mohammad Hasan Akhund who is a United Nations declared militant.
In this context, the US-Russia meeting with India is believed to have a different significance.
Russia’s National Security Adviser Nikolai Petrosev arrived in India on Wednesday for a two-day visit. Ajit Doval sat in a meeting with him on Wednesday.
The Daily Vendor Newspaper learnt that besides meeting Doval, Petroshev will also hold phone talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jayashankar.
Petroshev’s visit to India is coming shortly after talks between the two heads of countries. The Indian Prime Minister Modi and Russian Prime Minister Putin spoke on the telephone on August 24.
The discussion between Doval and Burns is not known. But there is no doubt that the international community has played a major role in the security situation behind the Taliban’s return. The current situation in Afghanistan is also thought to be at the forefront of that discussion.
Meanwhile, informed sources said that Ajit Doval’s meeting with the CIA chief in Delhi on Tuesday was also important.
The whole world is divided over the recognition of Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Recognition of countries like Pakistan, Russia, China and Iran is only a formal process. Because Moscow and Beijing have been negotiating with the Taliban for the past seven years to corner America. That effort has been fruitful this time. Similarly, the Taliban is Islamabad’s main weapon to reduce India’s influence in Afghanistan.
The rest are European countries and America. Even Talibans are not being recognized by those countries at the moment, it will not have much effect on the Taliban. It is in this situation that the US and Russia meet periodically with India.
