Succor to rape victims in Anambra as Police open referral centre

Police in Anambra State have introduced Police Sexual Assault Referral  Centre (P-SARC ) within the command for people who have experienced rape and sexual violence.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, who disclosed this in a statement said the center was approved by the Commissioner Police, John Abang following yearnings of various stakeholders to introduce the such facility within the command.

He said the centre would also provide immediate medical, psychological, or emotional support needed by the victims.

He said, “Following consultative meeting with the Anambra Police Command, Directorate of Women affairs,Human Right and other Non governmental organisations (NGOs) the Nigeria Police Medical Services Anambra State Command under the watch of  the Commissioner Police *CP John  B _Abang_ fdc* has yielded to the yearnings of various stakeholders to introduce *Police Sexual Assault Referral  Centre (P-SARC )* within the command.

“The centre is aimed at providing services to people who have experienced Rape and sexual violence.

“A well trained rape crisis centre support workers will be there to meet and discuss with the victims.

Mohammed listed other services rendered by the group to include Medical examination and treatment for any injuries, Emergency contraception, Checking for Sexually Transmitted Infections and Emotional support.

“Others include Post Exposure Prophylaxis, Collection of forensic evidence for legal purposes, Follow-up care, Counseling and Rehabilitation, Providing useful information and maintaining forensic data on Sexual offences,” he added.
