SPACS brutalized female corps member in Anambra, not SARS

Anambra state Co-ordinator, National Youth Service Corps, Mr. Kehinde Aremu on Wednesday absolved the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives of the alleged brutality of a female corps member in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.

He said the act was carried out by the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS), who he said had apologized.

An online publication had reported that operatives of the SARS in the state had broken into the corps member’s apartment about 2am in search of some internet fruadsters and allegedly molested her while she was naked and defenseless.

But Aremu said the SARS were innocent of the allegations.

He said, “It was not SARS operatives but the Special Anti-Cult Squad ( SPACS ). They traced some students to her room.

“I reported the matter to the commissioner of police and the operatives of SPACS who did it have apologized to the girl; so the girl is not pressing for damages except that they would repair the net that was damaged.”

The coordinator also ruled out plans to further the case, saying both the girl and parents had accepted the apologies.

“There is no need for that because there have been instances where the police rescued corps members from danger and that one ugly incident won’t smear the cordial relationship with the police.

“The girl has accepted the apologies. The parents have accepted too. Police do more for corps members. We did all we needed to do for the SPACS operatives to be identified and the police commissioner got them to apologise to the girl directly.

“Even the commissioner of police thanked her for forgiving them but still assured the girl that he will deal with them.”

Police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed also confirmed that those that carried out the operation were not SARS operatives, adding that the issue was still under investigation.
