Armed robbers on Monday mistakenly shot dead one of their gang members during a robbery attack in Mgbuka-Amanzu road/Pillar Bread junction, Nkpikpa, near Oniitsha, Anambra State,
The suspects who stormed the area also killed a passerby in the process, dispossessing him of his valuables.
An eyewitness, who simply identified herself as Okwute said the gunmen, numbering about four and riding in a tricycle, double crossed an unidentified man heading to church, shot and dispossessed him of his belongings and fled.
She said the miscreants, while leaving the area, shot sporadically in a commando-like manner, but unfortunately for them, the bullet hit one of them and he died instantly.
“They quickly removed the corpse of their gang-member from the tricycle and dumped it by the roadside as they drove about 50 metres away from the scene,” she said.
The Daily Vendor gathered that the police operatives from the Okpoko Police Division had since evacuated the corpse.
In another development, three lifeless bodies were also recovered along the Enugu-Onitsha road on Monday.
The deceased were allegedly attacked by armed robbers while traveling to their various destinations late on Sunday.
When contacted, Police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, saying patrols had been intensified in the area.
He said, “On 22/01/2023 by 10:45 pm, police operatives responding to a distress calls along Obibuenyi Street Okpoko, recovered the lifeless body of a yet unidentified young man, who allegedly is an armed robber.
“Information from one of the eyewitnesses reveals, the 4man gang robbers operating with a tricycle and in an attempt to rob a victim of his personal belongings, mistakenly shot one of their gang members.
“While the victim escaped, the robbers abandoned their member with bullet wound on his chest and fled the scene.”
