Angry residents burn kidnap suspect as Police rescue victim in Anambra

A suspected kidnapper was on Wednesday set ablaze by irate mob in Ezi-Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The deceased, together with his gang were said to have abducted a woman after attacking and robbing occupants of an apartment within the area.

Neighbours reportedly intercepted the vehicle the suspects operated with and nabbed two of them after blocking exit points within the area.

“The angry neighbors set one of the suspects ablaze and destroyed their vehicle before the police arrived,” one of the residents said.

Confirming the incident, Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga said one of the suspects was arrested while the damaged vehicle was recovered.

He commended the community’s efforts in apprehending the suspects, but condemned the mob action.

He said, “In the early hours of today 3/5/2023, police operatives attached to Ogbunike division responding to a distress call along St Monica College Ogbunike road, arrested one Mr Jamui Emiron ‘m’ aged 22years and recovered one already damaged yellow Mitsubishi L300 bus with Anambra reg nos: UKP 729 A.

“The suspect is among a gang of armed robbers that attacked and robbed occupants of a residential house in Ezi-Ogidi, abducted a female victim and was en route to their den before police were alerted. 

“The members of the neighbourhood had already supported the police by blocking the exit points within the area, intercepting the vehicle and apprehending two of the gang members while others escape.

“Unfortunately, upon the arrival of the police operatives, one of the suspects has already been set ablaze by the angry mob and the criminal operational vehicle was badly damaged. The Operatives rescued the victim, the second suspect and recover the vehicle.”

Ikenga said the rescued victim has been taken to the hospital where he is currently receiving treatment while his accomplice is in custody helping the Police with useful information in the ongoing operation to arrest other fleeing gang members.

While reiterating the campaign against mob action by the public who resort to jungle justice whenever they arrest suspects in respect of any crime, police spokesman encouraged them to take such suspects to the nearest Police Station whenever they were apprehended. 

“This would afford the Police the opportunity to conduct an appropriate investigation into the nefarious activities of the suspects and bring them to justice following extant laws,” he added.
