Rep. Chidoka Makes Case for Motorists, Commuters Over Multiple Check Points

A member of the House of Representative, Hon. Obinna Chidoka, representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, has made another case for his people on the floor of the 9th National Assembly, stressing the urgent need for dismantling of multiple check points on roads leading to Eastern States.

Chidoka in his motion ‘Resolution on Multiple Security On Roads Leading to and Within the South East Region’ said that the multiple checkpoints will not only cause an alarming traffic build up but also increased economic hardship on motorists and commuters more than ever, especially with the Christmas and New year fast approaching. A time when easterners travel home in their numbers from various parts of the country and overseas.

In a chat with Fox Channel, Chidoka said the motion was to address the untold hardship witnessed by motorists, travelers and other road users. Especially those travelling to and within the South East region, due to multiple makeshift road blocks and checkpoints by various security agencies, including the Nigerian police, SARS, Nigerian Army, Navy, Nigerian Security & Civil Defense Corps, Customs Service, NDLEA, and Federal Road Safety Commission.”

Chidoka while letting the House know the urgency of adopting the motion, pointed out that, “With the Christmas and New year fast approaching, when South Easterners within and outside Nigeria travel home to celebrate with their families, friends and loved ones, traffic build up on the roads leading to and from the south east will increase drastically with increased hardship on motorist and other road users, as has been the case in recent years, where motorists and road users were in traffic for over 24 hours on that road.”

However, the House has resolved to urge the federal government to direct security agencies to remove their makeshift roadblocks or checkpoints on the roads leading to and within the south east states to facilitate free flow of traffic, relief the pains and hardship of motorists and other road users, especially during this festive period.

It also resolved to urge security agencies to collaborate with one another in the discharge of their responsibilities

Furthermore, the house will urge the Federal Ministry of Works & Power and the Federal Road Maintenance Agency to help remove all the makeshift roadblocks, checkpoints and debris from these roads to facilitate free flow of traffic.
