Reactions as journalists visit Ogbunike cave

…Ogbunike cave is not a tourist centre, it’s a terror centre – veteran

Media practitioners in Anambra State have raised concerns over the condition of the famous Ogbunike cave in Oyi Local Government Area of the State.

The journalists spoke during a visit to the cave as part of the activities marking the State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) 2022 Press week.

While some expressed excitement with the facility, others decried its deplorable condition, urging state government to transform the site to attract visitors from Nigeria and beyond for the benefit of the state.

The committee chairman, Ify Obi described the visit as unforgettable experience, praying for another opportunity to revisit the area.

“It’s an experience, this is my first time to be here. Next time, I’ll gather more strength to enable me explore the facility better,” he said.

Another veteran who spoke in confidence said, “Ogbunike cave is not a tourist centre, it’s a terror centre. The guards should forewarn people with heart and cardio vascular problems to shun going into such rigour in the name of tourism.

Earlier, Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra State Council,  Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu described the cave as an oil well yet to be tapped by any administration in the State.

He regretted that successive governments had not done enough to install facilities that would transform the place to tourist attraction site, as well as attract visitors from Nigeria and beyond for the benefit of the state.

He said, “It is unfortunate that this kind of place is existing without government’s presence. Why should government not give out this place to fantastic developers to erect fantastic hotels or create an estate around the place, so that people all over the would can visit for tourism?

“Let governor Soludo’s government not play by the words, let them play action here because there are very good developers out there who can do fantastic job and turn the place to a source of revenue for the state government.”

“For instance, Journalists were asked to pay one thousand naira each, to access the cave. Government can make the place lively to make people pay more than that. So that this place can be generating more revenue for the community and for the government”

Odogwu however commended immediate past administration for its efforts in rehabilitating the road leading to the site and for building other structures including the over 300 stair case, the reception spots and the urinary facilities.
