Rape: Anambra CP blames parents, guardians

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. John Abang has blamed increasing cases of rape in the society to inability of some parents and guardians to take care of their children and wards.

Abang who made the disclosure to newsmen in Awka, also identified compromises from families of victims of rape during prosecution of suspects as its biggest challenge.

He regretted that most rape victims were trusted relatives and friends.

He said, “The biggest challenge the police are having on rape cases is that some of the families of the victims compromise during the prosecution of suspects.”

According to the CP, the Command has arrested 16 suspected rapists in the area, adding that 12 had been charged to court, while 3 were still under investigation.

He explained that fifteen cases of rape had been reported to the command in the past few months, but revealed that none had been convicted.

Abang appealed to Non Governmental Organisations and individuals to support the police in the fight against rape in the society.
