…says regular attacks on INEC facilities, attack and assassination of party candidates could mar successful outcomes of the election in the region
The Catch them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI) has condemned the assassination of the Labour Party State House of Assembly Candidate for Onuimo LGA in Imo state, Hon. Christopher Eleghu, as well as attacks on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in in the state by unknown gunmen.
Executive Director, Nonso Orakwe who stated this in a statement regretted that the regular attacks and assassinations could affect Southeast and mar successful outcomes of the election in the region.
He called on groups and individuals with interest of Southeast and Nigeria at heart to abhor all forms of violence before, during and after the 2023 general elections.
He said, “We receive with dismay the assassination of the Labour Party State House of Assembly Candidate for Onuimo LGA in Imo state, Hon. Christopher Eleghu, was recently shot and killed by unknown gunmen at his home.
“His cars and house was also burnt down by the assassins. This is coming a few days after the State INEC headquarters in Owerri, Imo state was attacked by unknown gunmen.
“The attacks affected the building occupied by the election and party monitoring department. One official vehicle was also burnt in the attack bring this to the third attack in the state.
“These regular attacks on INEC facilities, attack and assassination of party candidates and supporters could affect Southeast further and mar successful outcomes of the election in the region.
“We therefore, call on all groups and individuals who have the interest of South East and Nigeria at heart to abhor all forms of violence and its triggers before, during and after the 2023 general elections.
“We call on young people to take ownership of the electoral process in a peaceful manner that will make South East great again.
“Nigeria is our own and we have no other country. Vote Not Fight, Election No Be War!”
